A huge component of SEO is keyword research. This means before you publish a blog post or create a pin on Pinterest, you look up what keywords to use.

If you’re a small blogger or business owner, it’s best to use long-tail keywords. These are keywords that are more than a couple of words.

For example, a short-tail keyword could be something like healthy recipes. There’s going to be sooo many people searching for that because it’s such a general keyword.

BUT if you use a long-tail keyword, like keto dinner recipes, that’s much more specific and more likely to drive traffic.

Now that Pinterest has a new place to put alternate text, there are more places to put keywords.

How to use Pinterest Alt Text

Remember first and foremost that this tool is used for people who have visual impairments.

You need to provide an ACCURATE description of exactly what is happening in the picture and the text that is in the picture.

Before you can add alternative text, you need to have a Pinterest account for business.

Once you have a business account, when you create a pin you’ll see an area to add alternative text.

Click on add alt text. Now remember how we talked about Pinterest SEO earlier? It’s time to add those keywords. The keywords you add should also be used in your pin image so the alt text accurately describes the pin.

Add any other relevant details to alt text to fully describe it. Make it specific and accurate so that you’re describing exactly what the pin is about and what is going on in the picture.

This is NOT the place to keyword stuff. For example, don’t just put “make money from home | make money online | make money | work at home jobs | make extra money.

Put your keywords in sentences that are coherent. For example, “These are 25 work at home full-time jobs for stay at home moms.”

Pinterest gives you up to 500 characters to describe your pin image.

Now it’s time to publish your pin and you’re ready to go!
