Empowering Families Together: Wellroot’s Anticipated Impact in the New Year

Georgia Foster Care

by CEO & President Allison Ashe

As we enter the new year, I am eager to share Wellroot’s outlook for 2024 and reflect on the evolving dynamics of child welfare and family services. The past couple of years have had unprecedented challenges, but amidst them, I see a resilient spirit emerging that gives me hope and optimism for the future.

One notable shift that brings excitement is the return of volunteerism. Post-Covid, there was a noticeable decline in in-person volunteerism, but I am pleased to observe a positive change reflected throughout the 2023 holiday season. More individuals are excited to step up and physically wrap our families in support by contributing their time and effort.

While we have seen a decline in the number of families interested in fostering, we have deepened our commitment to help keep families together. We are leading the way in Georgia to shift resources upstream and scale programs that address the needs of families with support that tackles the root causes of their challenges. We will continue to grow our new family services programs that aim to keep families together in hopes of healing past traumas and resolving challenges by assisting with housing, family therapy, and an evidence-based home visiting program.

Economic and industry conditions in an election year can often impact nonprofit investments. As we move forward, we are mindful of potential shifts to our fundraising strategies. The collective efforts of our community fuel our optimism for a year of transformative change.

The Fostering Success Tax Credit will continue to provide a significant funding opportunity that expands support services for youth transitioning from foster care.  After a year of contributing to organizations like Wellroot Family Services, which aids aged-out youth, we hope Georgia residents take advantage of the tax credit and stand in the gap for youth and protect them from homelessness.

Yet, as we navigate the post-pandemic world, it’s crucial to recognize the lasting effects on the Mental Health of children, youth, and young adults. The demand for mental health services continues to rise, and we anticipate this need persisting in the foreseeable future. Our commitment to mental health training and support remains as we dedicate ourselves to preparing our community for the challenges ahead.

Moreover, balancing the increasing demand for mental health services with a shortage of therapists in the workforce calls for intentional efforts in recruiting. We are taking proactive steps to address this by supporting social workers while they are still in school through internships and offering Continuing Education Credits.

As we embark on this journey together, I am optimistic about the positive changes. The return of community engagement, coupled with a commitment to mental health and addressing surmountable challenges, positions us to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children and families in Georgia. We look forward to a successful 2024 and appreciate your continued support and contributions.
