When teenagers in foster care turn 18, they have the option to stay in state care and receive supportive services that will help them make the challenging transition toward independence. However, these courageous, brave youth often do not have a family support network and need assistance establishing a path towards successful adult lives.
In June 2022, Wellroot Family Services purchased 750 East Lake Drive with plans to provide housing for Young Adults currently in our Transition and Independent Living Program and potentially, young families in our Family Housing Program.
“We chose the Oakhurst property because of its close proximity to jobs, public transportation and its location in the vibrant Oakhurst community,” Wellroot CEO Allison Ashe said. “We are excited about this new property. It is an ideal location for the young adults we serve. Our long-term plans include remodeling the existing single-family home in the center to create a commons area that we can use for resident activities and life skills training.”
Remodeling Plans
Plans are underway to update the property in preparation for its new residents. Phase one, which began in October, includes roof installation, foundation repairs, safety improvements and other cosmetic enhancements. Phase two, beginning spring 2023 after additional funding is secured, will include remodeling the existing footprint to create a central services building, upgrading the individual apartments and other enhancements that will reflect the character of the surrounding neighborhood.
“The property is centrally located in the beautiful Oakhurst neighborhood near downtown Decatur and is close proximity to our offices in Tucker,” said Ashe. “We believe housing the young adults together in one complex will create a more loving and nurturing environment.”
Wellroot’s residential programs serve young adults ages 18-24 who were previously in foster care, and young families who need stable housing. The programs provide support services including ongoing life skills development, financial literacy, tutoring, and career development. About Our Residential Programs
Transitional and Independent Living Programs
We shepherd young adults as they transition from foster care to adulthood. Our programs provide 24-hour support as well as community-based housing to each youth. Wellroot offers ongoing life skills development, including financial literacy, tutoring, personal development, career development and education about nutrition and health. As part of both programs, we guide residents through the process of earning their high school diploma or GED and offer assistance entering college or trade school. Learn more.
Family Housing Program
Families accepted into our program are serious about leveraging the support we offer and gaining the skills needed to ensure their long-term sustainability upon completion of our program. We provide housing and financial assistance to these families, removing the barrier of homelessness by helping them move toward self-sufficiency. We offer courses in parenting, financial management, career coaching, and personal development among others, as well as help with continuing education. Upon graduation from our program, families have at least $1,000 in savings and steady employment. Learn more.
