Today I'm celebrating Maxwell Caulfield's 59th birthday by sharing a "few" groovy things about his life and career:

1) Maxwell Newby was born in Belper, Derbyshire (a county of England) on November 23, 1959. He later took his stage surname from the character, Holden Caulfield, in J.D. Salinger's novel, Catcher in the Rye.

2. At age seven, he appeared under the name "Maxwell Findlater" (his mother's maiden name) in the 1967 film, Accident, starring Dirk Bogarde.

3. In order to get an Actor's Equity card, he joined a "nude show" at London's Windmill Theatre and dance naked to the music of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

4. In May 1978, an 18-year-old Caulfield moved to New York City and made his NYC stage debut in the gay farce, Hot Rock Hotel.

5. In November 1979, he made his Off-Broadway debut as the lead in Class Enemy, which earned him a Theatre World Award.

6. In June 1980, he played an uncredited punk in three episodes of the ABC daytime soap, Ryan's Hope.



7. He met actress Juliet Mills (who is 18 years his senior) when they starred together in a 1980 touring production of the play, The Elephant Man, and they were married on December 2, 1980.

8. He received rave reviews for his performance in the 1981-82 Off-Broadway revival of Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane. Below you can watch him in a 1981 episode of the American Theatre Wing’s Working in the Theatre with Farley Granger, Gregory Hines, Amy Irving and Treat Williams.



9. After seeing him in Entertaining Mr. Sloane, film producer Allan Carr cast Caulfield as English exchange student Michael Carrington in the 1982 film, Grease 2.



10. On February 29, 1984, he appeared in the CBS movie, The Parade, starring Michael Learned, Rosanna Arquette and Geraldine Page.

11. He appeared in the 1984 film, Electric Dreams, with Lenny Von Dohlen and Virginia Madsen.

12. In April 1985, he performed completely nude for 40 minutes in the Public Theater production of Salonika starring Jessica Tandy and Elizabeth Wilson.

13. He and Charlie Sheen starred in the 1985 film, The Boys Next Door.




14. He played bad boy Miles Colby on Dynasty (1985-86), The Colbys (1985-87) and the 1991 miniseries, Dynasty: The Reunion.






15. He starred in the 1986 zombie horror film, The Supernaturals, with Nichelle Nichols and LeVar Burton.

16. He played a charismatic former thief in a 1987 episode of the ABC drama, Hotel.

17. In 1987, he briefly appeared sans pants in Joe Orton's Entertaining Mr. Sloane at Los Angeles' Mark Taper Forum, which was performed in repertory with Orton's Loot.

18. He starred opposite Stacy Keach in a 1988 touring production of the play, Sleuth.

19. He starred in the 1989 thriller, Mind Games, with Edward Albert and Shawn Weatherly.



20. He appeared in the 1989 cult film, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat, with David Carradine, Bruce Campbell and Morgan Brittany.

21. In November 1989, he starred in the CBS miniseries, Judith Krantz's Till We Meet Again, with Bruce Boxleitner, Hugh Grant, Courteney Cox and Juliet Mills.



22. He starred in the 1990 NBC movie, Blue Bayou, with Alfre Woodard, Mario Van Peebles and Elizabeth Ashley.

23. On October 4, 1990, he appeared in the pilot episode of the Fox teen drama, Beverly Hills, 90210, as a lawyer who was interested in Shannen Doherty's Brenda Walsh until he discovered she was only 16.

24. He played a murderous horse groom in a 1991 episode of the CBS series, Murder, She Wrote.

25. He appeared in the 1992 horror comedy, Waxwork II: Lost in Time, starring Zach Galligan, Bruce Campbell and Juliet Mills.

26. He starred in the 1992 film, Dance with Death, with Martin Mull and Lisa Kudrow.

27. He starred in the 1993 film, Alien Intruder, with his Colbys co-star Tracy Scoggins, Billy Dee Williams and Jeff Conaway,

30. In 1995, he made his Broadway debut in J.B. Priestley's An Inspector Calls.

31. In July 1995, he played Chance Wayne in Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth at the Williamstown Theatre Festival.

32. He played former 80's pop idol Rex Manning in the 1995 film, Empire Records, starring Renée Zellweger and Liv Tyler.




33. He played Barbara Carrera's husband in the 1996 CBS movie, The Rockford Files: Godfather Knows Best, starring James Garner.

34. In 1996-97, he played artist/former mercenary Pierce Riley on the ABC daytime soap, All My Children.



35. He and Sam Trammell starred in the 1997 Off-Broadway production of My Night with Reg.

36. He played a stripper in a 1998 episode of the NBC sitcom, Veronica's Closet.

37. He played an actor with a fetish for natural blondes in the 1998 film, The Real Blonde, which also starred Matthew Modine, Catherine Keener, Daryl Hannah, Marlo Thomas and Kathleen Turner.



38. In August 1998, he starred opposite Juliet Mills in the play, Dial M for Murder, at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine, and at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis, Massachusetts.

39. On January 20, 1999, he appeared in an episode of the CBS sitcom, The Nanny.

40. He and Linda Purl starred in the 2000 thriller, The Perfect Tenant.

41. He played Rafe Barrett on the 2000-01 Comedy Central sitcom, Strip Mall.

42. In April 2002, he played Megan Mullally's husband in the farce, He Hunts, at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, California.

43. In 2003-04, he played Dr. Jim Brodie on the British medical drama, Casualty.

44. He starred in the 2006 Off-Broadway play, Tryst.

45. In 2007, he starred opposite Kate Mulgrew in an Off-Broadway production of Charles Busch's play, Our Leading Lady.

46. In May 2007, he made his West End stage debut as Billy Flynn in Chicago and later that year played the role in the Broadway production.

47. In July 2007, he and James Beaman starred in the musical, La Cage aux Folles, at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine.

48. In March 2008, he played Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm in Sondheim's A Little Night Music at Centerstage in Baltimore. The production also starred Stephen Bogardus, Barbara Walsh, Kate Baldwin and Josh Young.

49. In 2009-10, he played bigamist Mark Wylde on the British soap opera, Emmerdale.



50. In 2010, he and Juliet Mills starred in a UK touring production of the Alan Ayckbourn comedy, Bedroom Farce. They promoted the production on The Michael Ball Show on September 1, 2010.



51. In 2011, he starred in an off-Broadway production of the comedy, Cactus Flower, and he promoted the show on an episode of Broadway.com's Show People with Paul Wontorek



52. In 2013, he appeared in two episodes of the web series, DeVanity.




53. In 2013-14, he starred in a UK tour of Singin' in the Rain.



54. On February 20, 2013, he played Claire's ex-boyfriend and college professor on the ABC sitcom, Modern Family.

55. In March 2015, he played Felix Unger in Neil Simon's The Odd Couple at the Laguna Playhouse in Southern California.

56. In 2015, he toured Australia with his wife, Juliet Mills, and sister-in-law, Hayley Mills, in James Kirkwood's comedy, Legends!



57. In October 2015, he played Henry Higgins in the Anchorage Concert Association's production of My Fair Lady at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

58. In 2016, he played Nathan Detroit in a UK tour of Guys and Dolls.




59. In October 2018, he played Preysing in the musical, Grand Hotel, at the UCLA Freud Playhouse. The production also starred Sharon Lawrence and Hal Linden.
