The 2017 DEEP DISH Reader Survey: The Results

A Big Thank You to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. I greatly appreciate your feedback, and I look forward to serving you many more years of DEEP DISH. Now here are the results:

1. What current features do you enjoy the most on DEEP DISH?

Dish of the Day 85% (of course you do!)
Battle of the Movie Stars 69%
Remembering...(tributes to recently deceased stars) 69%
Battle of the Broadway Stars 56%
The Groovy List (a weekly roundup of groovy gay pop culture) 46%
Groovy Things about...(birthday tributes to stars) 46%
365 Groovy Books Worth Reading 40%
Groovy Giveaway 33%
Groovy Flashback (old magazine articles) 31%
10 Groovy Things to Do in...(a monthly list) 28%
Soap Dish 18%
Chicago Theatre Reviews 15%
Groovy Comics 10%

2. What past features on DEEP DISH do you miss?

Groovy Guy of the Month 39%
Tuesday Trivia 35%
Groovy Music Showdown 32%
Deeper Dish interviews 26%
Web Series Worth Watching 24%
The Groove Tube 11%

Groovy Guy of the Month and Groovy Music Showdown (featuring songs instead of albums) will both definitely return in 2018. And it's very likely that both Tuesday Trivia and Deeper Dish interviews will also eventually return. As for web series, I now include my favorites in the weekly Groovy List.

3. Which of these new features that I'm considering would you be interested in?

The Groovy Guide to...(an episode guide to past TV shows) 67%
365 Groovy Comic Books Worth Reading 19%

I would like to feature The Groovy Guide to some of my favorite TV shows, but it will take time to compile this. So hopefully in 2018 I will begin to feature these posts. As for comic books, I will probably feature them someday because I still have a large collection from childhood that would be fun to share. I'm also planning three other new features - 365 Groovy Movies Worth Watching (to begin in late 2018) and Groovy Game Show Flashback (Match Game, What's My Line?) and Groovy Talk Show Flashback (Johnny Carson, David Letterman), which will both begin in the next few months.

4. If I was to feature an episode guide to past TV shows, which series would you like to see?

Bewitched and The Mary Tyler Moore Show were the two most requested shows.

Other requests that I especially liked are The Bob Newhart Show, Dallas, Dark Shadows, Designing Women, Dynasty, Mary Hartman, Maude, Rhoda and WKRP in Cincinnati.

As for Knots Landing and Falcon Crest, I would love to feature them - but the complete series need to be released on DVD.

5. If you enjoy my Groovy Comics feature, please recommend any past or present newspaper comic strips that you would like to see.

For the 10% of my readers who enjoy this feature, here are a few requests that I especially liked: Apartment 3-G, Bloom County, Li'l Abner, Mary Worth, Peanuts and Rex Morgan M.D. I also received a request for Meatmen (a 1986-2004 anthology of gay male comics) but, unfortunately, I do not have access to any of them.

6. Is there any male or female star that you would like to see featured in a birthday tribute?

The following stars have already been featured (click on name to see post): Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Joan Crawford, Jamie Lee Curtis, Doris Day, Madeline Kahn, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Chita Rivera and Meryl Streep

The following stars may be featured in the future: Kathy Bates, George Clooney, Sean Connery, Olympia Dukakis, Sam Elliott, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Peggy Lee, Paul Lynde, Elizabeth Montgomery, Megan Mullally and Michelle Pfeiffer

As for Jean Harlow and Judy Holliday, they both sadly died at such young ages (26 and 43, respectively) that neither of them have enough credits for an in-depth birthday tribute. However, I may still feature each of them in a mini-tribute on The Groovy List someday.

7. What would make reading DEEP DISH a better experience?

Here are some reader suggestions followed by my comments:

"More of everything" (okay)

"Good looks is one thing...but I tend to be more attracted to REAL men" (my Dish of the Day posts feature guys whom I find attractive - and I think they are all REAL men who happen to be good-looking)

"I love your fiction. I'd love to see you return to doing serialized fiction. I still remember the short-lived serial that ran years ago" (I would like to feature serialized fiction on DEEP DISH, but it just takes so much time to write that I would probably have to neglect everything else. But who knows - never say never)

"i wish it would show up in my feed more often..." (not sure why this doesn't happen)

"70s and 80s music feature especially disco" (I've featured lots of music from these decades in the past - and when Groovy Music Showdown returns in 2018, disco will definitely be heard again)

"Groovy gay authors suggestions and groovy gay filmmakers suggestions" (check out my 365 Groovy Books Worth Reading posts for some gay authors and my 200 Groovy Gay Movies You Need to See post for some gay filmmakers)

"Better layout" and "A general guide to the categories by years past" (I think my layout is pretty easy to navigate, and you can find old posts in the DEEP DISH Archive in the sidebar or by using the Search box in the upper left-hand corner. I also plan to add a few more sidebar categories of regular features)

"PSK" (I assume this means Phi Sigma Kappa, my college fraternity, which was often groovy but never gay - since none of us were out of the closet back then. But I have no plans to feature PSK here on DEEP DISH)

"Shorter articles, fewer videos. I feel guilty if I don't finish them, but there are too many to get through in the soap articles, for instance" (if you're not in to binge-watching, then just read a post or watch videos at your leisure - they aren't going anywhere)

"Phone numbers for the Dishes of the Day!" (Ha ha)

"I liked that you did feature ATWT in your most recent Soap Dish. So, I'd like to see more soaps featured other than ABC and possibly the nighttime classics Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing" (Dallas and Dynasty may be featured in a future Groovy Guide - and I will continue to feature ATWT and other CBS/NBC soap operas in my Soap Dish posts. But don't expect to see The Young and the Restless or Days of our Lives since, unfortunately, old episodes of both shows are not available online)

"I enjoy all that you do and appreciate all your hard work on Deep Dish!!!" and "Nothing ~ it's fabulous as is!!! (thank you)

2. Ryan Reynolds
3. Chris Hemsworth
4. Matt Bomer, Daniel Craig, Julian Edelman and Hugh Jackman
5. Many others including Zac Efron, Ryan Gosling, Steve Grand, Brad Pitt and Tom Selleck (despite his rabid politics!)

9. What is your gender and your age?

100% male between the ages of 27 and 70 (average age: 55)
