Remembering Martin Landau 1928 - 2017


Actor Martin Landau, who died Saturday at age 89, was best known for his roles as Rollin Hand in the CBS series, Mission: Impossible (1966–69), and as Commander John Koenig in the syndicated British series, Space: 1999 (1975–77). He received three Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Mission: Impossible. Other television credits include the 2006 ABC drama, The Evidence, and recurring roles on CBS's Without a Trace (2004-09) and HBO's Entourage (2006-08).

Landau won the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance as Bela Lugosi in Tim Burton's 1994 film, Ed Wood. He also received Oscar nominations for Francis Ford Coppola's Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) and Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989). Other film credits include Pork Chop Hill (1959), North by Northwest (1959), The Gazebo (1959), Cleopatra (1963), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Nevada Smith (1966), They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970), Meteor (1979), Without Warning (1980), Alone in the Dark (1982), Mistress (1992), Sliver (1993), Intersection (1994), City Hall (1996), B*A*P*S (1997), The X-Files (1998), Rounders (1998), EDtv (1999), The Majestic (2001), Entourage (2015) and The Last Poker Game (2017).

Landau also starred in the 1984-85 national tour of the Broadway revival of Dracula. In 2001, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and he was married to his Mission: Impossible and Space: 1999 co-star, actress Barbara Bain, from 1957 to 1993.

On October 21, 1970, he appeared with Barbara Bain and husband and wife Robert Goulet and Carol Lawrence in "Bob & Carol & Martin & Barbara", an episode of NBC's Kraft Music Hall.



He and Barbara Bain introduced the premiere episode of Space: 1999 on September 4, 1975.



He starred in Ed Wood (1994) with Johnny Depp and Sarah Jessica Parker.



Anna Paquin presented him with the Oscar during the 67th Academy Awards on March 27, 1995.



He was a guest on the syndicated talk show, Donny & Marie, on September 23, 1998.



He was interviewed by the New York Daily News in April 2017.
