Today I'm celebrating Dame Joan Collins' 84th birthday by sharing a "few" groovy things about her life and career:

1) She was born in Paddington, London, on May 23, 1933. Her father was an agent whose clients would later include Shirley Bassey, the Beatles and Tom Jones, and her younger sister Jackie became a bestselling romance novelist.

2. In 1946, she made her stage debut playing a boy in Henrik Ibsen's A Doll House at the Arts Theatre in London.

3. She made her feature film debut as an uncredited beauty contest entrant in the 1951 British comedy, Lady Godiva Rides Again (which was released in the United States as Bikini Baby).

4. She starred opposite James Kenney in the 1953 British film, Cosh Boy (which was released in the United States as The Slasher).



5. She starred in the 1953 British drama, Turn the Key Softly.



6. She played a woman who is shipwrecked on a deserted island with three men in the 1953 British comedy, Our Girl Friday (which was released in the United States as The Adventures of Sadie).

7. Director Howard Hawks cast her in her first Hollywood film, 1955's Land of the Pharaohs, which led to a contract at 20th Century Fox.

8. She played one of the Queen's ladies in waiting in the 1955 historical drama, The Virgin Queen, starring Bette Davis as Queen Elizabeth I.

9. She replaced Marilyn Monroe in the title role of Evelyn Nesbit in the 1955 film, The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.



10. She played showgirl Crystal Allen in The Opposite Sex, the 1956 musical remake of The Women that also starred June Allyson, Dolores Gray and Ann Miller.



11. She played the title role (opposite Richard Burton) in the 1957 British film, Sea Wife.

12. She and Jayne Mansfield starred in the 1957 drama, The Wayward Bus.

13. She played James Mason's sister in the 1957 drama, Island in the Sun, which also starred Harry Belafonte (whom Collins had a brief affair with in real life).

14. She starred opposite Robert Wagner in the 1957 espionage drama, Stopover Toyko.

15. She starred opposite Gregory Peck in the 1958 western, The Bravados.

16. She starred in the 1958 film, Rally Round the Flag, Boys!, with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

18. In 1959, she did a screen test for the title role in the 1963 film, Cleopatra, but Elizabeth Taylor was eventually cast instead.
