Myths & Facts About Masturbation

For centuries, Masturbation has been considered a sin, and many ways have been devised to eradicate this “bad” habit in adolescence. It was possible to meet opinions that masturbation, among other things, leads to blindness, causes mental disorders and even infertility.

Modern studies of human sexuality have disproved a number of myths about masturbation. It turns out that masturbation can even have a beneficial effect on the body – reduce stress, pressure, improve resistance to pain, or protect against cardiovascular diseases.

Masturbation is not only a way to replace sex, but it’s also a supplement to sexual intercourse. And it’s good for health and also increases sexual skills.

MYTH 1: Masturbation kills the desire FOR sex

Truth: Masturbation is one of the best ways to get to know your body and discover new facets of your own sexuality. This very personal process helps us explore what we like and don’t like in bed, and allows us to get more pleasure from sex with a loved one.

MYTH 2: Masturbation leads to infertility

Truth: Masturbation doesn’t cause infertility and doesn’t increase your chances of getting pregnant. However, doctors still have two small caveats. First: people who use sex toys for foreplay should always keep them clean in order to avoid transmitting various infectious diseases that can cause infertility. Second, in rare cases, the doctor can recommend to reduce the number of masturbation due to a low sperm count.

MYTH 3: Masturbation during adolescence means that you are hypersexual or sex-dependent

Truth: Many people still believe that early adolescent masturbation is an abnormal phenomenon. In fact, it’s quite natural. The genitals are “armed” with all necessary nerve systems that allow you to take pleasure long before puberty. It doesn’t matter at what age you started masturbating, it has nothing to do with your sexual behavior as an adult.

MYTH 4: Masturbation has age limit

Truth: Just as there is no appropriate age to start masturbating, there is no limit to stop. Sexologists say that it’s practiced at all stages of psychosexual development, from infancy to old age. Although this behavior is more common during puberty (90% of boys and 60% of girls), it’s closely related to specifics of this period. You will never be too young or old to love yourself.

MYTH 5: AN EXCESSIVE MASTURBATION CAUSEs ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Truth: There are a number of psychological and physical reasons for male “inaction”. Sometimes desire and excitement disappear under the influence of these factors. But neither the fact of masturbation, nor its frequency, has nothing to do with erectile dysfunction.

MYTH 6: MASTURBATION LEADS TO SEXUAL EXHAUSTION

Truth: The number of orgasms that a person experiences over a certain period of time isn’t predetermined anywhere. So there are no restrictions on satisfying yourself and having sex at the same time. This applies to both sexes. In healthy men, the testicles always produce sperm, and the prostate always produces seminal fluid.

MYTH 7: Excessive Masturbation leads to prostate cancer in men

Truth: Neither hypertrophy nor prostate cancer have anything to do with masturbation. The results of the study showed that excessive sexual activity (including masturbation) reduces the risk of prostate cancer.

MYTH 8: If you don’t masturbate — you are frigid

Truth: It’s a popular misconception – “everyone does it”. But it’s not entirely true. According to statistics, 95% of men and 89% of women masturbate in private. And there is no right or wrong. You are free to choose and do what you want.

MYTH 9: MASTURBATION CAUSES MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS

Truth: In fact, masturbation can only cause a sense of guilt. In general, masturbation doesn’t cause physical or mental health problems. However, psychologists believe that if it becomes intrusive and interferes with other things — school or work — it can affect the human psyche. In this case, it’s necessary to contact sexologist or psychotherapist.

MYTH 10: All men masturbate

Truth: There are men who deliberately don’t do this. For various reasons, such as strongly ingrained beliefs that masturbation is a sin or disease, or because of various sexual prejudices.

MYTH 11: Men can do it, but women can’t

Truth: The reasons for masturbation are the same for everyone, regardless of gender: it helps to relax and take pleasure. Men, indeed, masturbate more often, but not much. Research shows that 7 out of 10 men and 5 out of 10 women do this quite often.

MYTH 12: PEOPLE IN RELATIONSHIPS DON’T MASTURBATE

Truth: If during masturbation a person gives up to sexual fantasies, it doesn’t mean that a person would have made them a reality and cheated the partner. Every person sometimes wants to relax, not thinking about the unspoken requirements that somehow exist in a couple.

However, if you prefer to masturbate more often to the detriment of sex with a partner, it may signal relationship difficulties. In this case, it’s useful to contact a sexologist or psychotherapist.

MYTH 13: WOMEN CAN BECOME ADDICTED TO VIBRATORS

Truth: Some women, of course, may eventually prefer stimulation with a vibrator. However, it’s just an individual preference, not an “addiction”. Many women, by the way, use a vibrator not only for masturbation, but also when having sex with a partner.

MYTH 14: Masturbation should disappear at the beginning of regular sex

Truth: Studies by American sexologists show that about 11% of husbands and 7% of wives continue to masturbate, being quite satisfied with sex. It confirms that masturbation can be a great addition to coitus.

MYTH 15: IF YOU USE A VIBRATOR, YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO REACH ORGASM DURING SEX WITH A PARTNER

Truth: The vagina, breast nipples, and other erogenous areas also respond to stimulation from a partner as when using a vibrator. Only the subjective sensations are different. However, reaction itself cannot fail to occur, since both processes involve nerve endings and the same excitation mechanisms.
