Mark Clattenburg explains who was to blame for wrongly denying Sheffield United a goal against Aston Villa

Mark Clattenburg says VAR should have been used to help Michael Oliver at Villa Park on Wednesday.

Aston Villa were fortunate to escape going a goal down just before half time of their clash against Sheffield United after Orjan Nyland dragged the whole of the ball over his own goal line.

Some of the Blades players even started to celebrate and looked to referee Oliver to confirm the goal but it wasn’t given. The game finished goalless.

It later emerged that Hawk-Eye’s seven cameras around the goal were unable to tell if it went in as they were obscured by Villa goalkeeper Nyland, a defender and the goalpost.

The Goal Decision System is usually very reliable but fell short during this match, however, VAR – overseen by Paul Tierney in Stockley Park for the match – had the ability to overrule the call.

Speaking on Jim White, Clattenburg said: “If the technology has failed then VAR has a duty, a protocol to check that the ball has entered the goal.

“He [Paul Tierney] had a minute to quickly check that the ball had crossed the line.

“We see within 30 seconds that there’s a problem, therefore Paul Tierney in his duty to Michael Oliver, should have informed him that we had a problem and stopped the match to have a look at it.

“You can clearly see that the technology failed. If there are doubts, then we have to say ‘okay, we’re not 100 per cent sure, yet.’

“The ball clearly crossed the line and Paul Tierney’s duty should have been to tell Michael Oliver that the goal had been scored and overridden the technology.”

Goal-line technology was brought to the Premier League in the 2013/14 season.

And Clattenburg had a rather ironic tale to tell in light of its recent shortcomings.

He added: “Ironically, when we did all the testing, because referees were very inquisitive with how it was going to work, it was actually at Villa Park where the system was trialled.

“We used to try and get the system to fail but it never did.

“Therefore last night, when it said the seven cameras didn’t pick up the ball entering the goal… it just doesn’t make sense.”
