With every day that passes, Arsenal fans fear losing their best striker in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Aubameyang is stalling on signing a new contract, which expires in June 2021, meaning the club may be forced to sell him this summer to avoid losing him for free.

There’s still time to tie the Gabon international to a pen new deal, but John Barnes has issued a warning to the Gunners.

He suggests the negotiations could lead to a similar situation the club find themselves in after they gave Mesut Ozil a £350,000-a-week contract in February 2018. The deal expires next summer.

It made him Arsenal’s highest-paid player by some distance but there have been occasions where he’s been left out of their starting line-up even when he’s not injured, including during Arsenal’s defeat at Man City on Wednesday.

It also led to the club losing the likes of Aaron Ramsey as they were unable to offer deals like that to other players.

Barnes told Bonus Code Bets: “The only person who’s worth that kind of money and being the highest paid player is a player who is 100 per cent committed to the club. Not a player who, if things aren’t going well, he wants to leave and then hold the club to ransom.

“First of all, the most important thing, regardless of money or contracts, is does he [Aubameyang] want to be at Arsenal?

“And then, if the club feel that he’s fully committed, regardless of whether they’re mid table or in the top one or two, then he is worth that. But that is a question mark.

It was the same thing with Ozil. Has Ozil been that committed to Arsenal in terms of warranting that that salary?

“We know he has the ability, but it may not turn out that way. So, it’s a question of Arsenal knowing or feeling that he’s committed to the football club.”
