What we’ve loved in sport: Eddie Hearn’s bonkers boxing plan, Erling Haaland scoring on Bundesliga return, Harry Kane’s incredible shirt gesture

The return of the Bundesliga finally gave football fans something to watch over the weekend.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund recorded routine wins, while RB Leipzig dropped points in the title race.

After a two-month absence of top-tier European football due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was a welcome sight.

And there have been plenty of other highlights over the past week. Here’s what we’ve enjoyed…

Harry Kane sponsoring Leyton Orient’s shirts

Harry Kane showed enormous generosity

Leyton Orient announced that Kane will be their new Shirt sponsor for the 2020/21 season.

The Tottenham and England striker made his professional debut in a loan spell with the O’s in 2011 and has donated the shirt sponsorship to three separate causes.

The home shirt features a ‘thank you’ message to frontline workers, the away shirt is for Haven House Children’s Hospice, and the third shirt has been donated to Mind, the mental health charity.

Kane said: “I was born and brought up only at a couple of miles from the stadium and I am really happy to have the opportunity to give back to the club that gave me my first professional start.

“This also gives me a platform to be able to say a big thank you to the many frontline heroes and charities out there who provide care and support during these challenging times.”

Well played, Harry!

Gary Lineker’s story of losing a bet to Michael Jordan

Lineker recalled a brilliant story about how he lost a golf bet of around £100 to basketball legend Michael Jordan.

The ex-England and Barcelona striker and his friend ‘Queeny’, a former European tour player, hosted Jordan, four basketball players and Hollywood actor Samuel L. Jackson at the Sunningdale club in Berkshire.

The proposal for a wager was brought up by ‘Queeny’ as he asked Jordan how much he wanted to bet, with MJ giving a cool reply.

Lineker recalled: “Now my mate Queeny liked a bet on the golf course and was a bit of a hustler. So we’re all stood there and Queeny says in his slightly posh voice….

“‘So Michael would you like bet, a little wager?’ Michael says ‘Sure, man.’ Queeny says ‘So how much would you like to play for?’ Michael puffs on his cigar, looks straight at him, smiles and says ‘Whatever makes you feel uncomfortable, man’.

“Mr Jordan had already won the day.”

Erling Haaland picking up where he left off

Haaland scored Borussia Dortmund’s opening goal in a 4-0 win over rivals Schalke on Saturday.

Incredibly, it was the 19-year-old’s 10th Bundesliga goal in just nine games since joining from RB Salzburg in January.

Unable to embrace his teammates after scoring due to social distancing rules, Haaland just danced in jubilation.

Two months without football? It’s clearly not a problem for Haaland…

Chelsea calling ex-players to check on their mental health

Tony Cascarino has revealed how Chelsea are going above and beyond to check up on their former players during the coronavirus pandemic.

The talkSPORT host scored eight goals in 45 games for the Blues between 1992 and 1994.

And he recently received a phone call from a member of staff at Chelsea.

Cascarino said: “Sally, who works for Chelsea Football Club, gave me a call randomly and says, ‘Hi Tony, you okay?’ I say, ‘Yes thanks’.

“I immediately did the stupid joke, ‘Does Frank (Lampard) need me?’

“Sally says, ‘No, we are just checking up on all our ex-players and making sure they are all okay, health wise and mentally’.

“It was really nice. I’ve spoken to Sally before and Chelsea have been exceptional with ex-players, they really have. They keep in communication with us.

“But in this period, they were making a call to see if everyone was alright.”

Mike Tyson’s training video

The former world heavyweight champion has been teasing a return to boxing in recent months.

The 53-year-old has said he is willing to fight in exhibition matches for charity, but there have also been rumours about a third bout with former rival Evander Holyfield.

On his Instagram page, Tyson uploaded a video of himself training and ended it with two words… ‘I’m back’.

He looks in incredible shape. Even at his age, not too many people would fancy taking on the ‘Baddest Man on The Planet’.

John Terry poking fun at himself

Terry’s playing career is remembered for his title-winning days with Chelsea.

But most football fans also tend to recall the time he celebrated Chelsea’s dramatic 2012 Champions League final win over Bayern Munich in his full kit, despite being suspended for the match.

And after eight years, it is nice to see that Terry can make fun of himself for it.

The Aston Villa assistant boss donned the full 2012 kit while filming a TV show for Sky, which left  Rory McIlroy and Jamie and Harry Redknapp in stitches.

Eddie Hearn’s ambitious plan for the return of boxing

The coronavirus pandemic has put boxing on hold since mid-March.

However, leading promoter Hearn is planning to host the return of the sport in his childhood BACK GARDEN.

From July, Hearn is hoping to broadcast shows on Sky Sports and DAZN from the garden of the Brentwood mansion he grew up in and now runs his company from, under the title ‘Matchroom Fight Camp’.

He said: “Just imagine it. It is summer, the house is all lit up, you can see Canary Wharf in the distance and fireworks are going off.

“Then over the hill walk Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin for a massive tear up on my lawn.

“World championship boxing in my garden? Oh, go on then. We cannot just bring boxing back with a dark studio. We have built our product on the razzmatazz, the sexiness and the drama.

“It has all been about building that moment for a fight, so we cannot afford to just bring people out like a gameshow.

“We want to create a gladiatorial environment that will not only ensure compelling viewing but will also ensure fighters can perform at the highest level.”
