Fastest goals in Premier League history, including strikes from Begovic, Long, Eriksen and King

It’s quite appropriate a speed merchant like Shane Long holds the record for the fastest goal in Premier League History.

The Southampton striker broke Ledley King’s 19-year record when he took just 7.69 seconds to score against Watford in April 2019.

The Republic of Ireland international pounced on an attempted clearance from Craig Cathcart, before expertly lifting the ball over Ben Foster in the Hornets goal.

We might not be seeing it broken any time soon either given football is currently suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s now been four weeks without a game played in England’s top flight, but luckily the Premier League are still reminding us of the amazing moments we’ll get to experience once it all kicks off again.

And this week they’ve put the top 10 fastest goals in Premier League history on their YouTube channel for us to enjoy.

10. Asmir Begovic (Stoke) vs Southampton – November 2, 2013 (13.64 seconds)

Yes, you are seeing right. A goalkeeper is on the list.

Begovic’s long kick forward cleared the entire Southampton defence and was allowed to bounce over Artur Boruc for the opener inside 14 seconds.

The Bosnian’s strike remains the longest goal in history, measured at 91.9 metres.

9. James Beattie (Southampton) vs Chelsea – August 28, 2004 (13.52 seconds)

The striker scored at both ends during this encounter, but started the game in positive vain with a rasping half-volley which evaded Petr Cech’s grasp in the Chelsea goal.

Frank Lampard later buried a penalty for the home side to condemn Saints to a 2-1 defeat in west London.

8. Kevin Nolan (Bolton) vs Blackburn – January 10, 2004 (13.48 seconds)

Fans were still coming into Ewood Park when Nolan fired the visitors ahead with a smart right-footed finish after being set up by Kevin Davies, who even in the first minute was giving his marker a hard time.

Bolton then found themselves 3-1 down before staging a remarkable comeback to beat their Lancashire rivals, with Nolan firing home from close range to seal a 4-3 victory for the Trotters.

7. Chris Sutton (Blackburn) vs Everton –  April 1, 1995 (12.94 seconds)

Alan Shearer rose highest to nod the ball down to his strike partner Sutton, who needed just one touch before emphatically firing home past Everton stopper Neville Southall.

Former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton also made the top 10

6. Dwight Yorke (Aston Villa) vs Coventry – September 30, 1995 (12.16 seconds)

The Trinidad and Tobago ace was a real fox in the box, so when Ian Taylor’s inviting cross found the former United striker there was only ever going to be one conclusion, as Yorke powered a header home to set the Villans on their way to a 3-0 victory at Highfield Road.

5. Mark Viduka (Leeds) vs Charlton – March 17, 2001 (11.90 seconds)

Ian Harte’s hopeful clearance was knocked on by Alan Smith, setting Mark Viduka clear through on goal and the striker made no mistake from close range.

Smith also got on the scoresheet at the start of the second half as David O’Leary’s men ran out 2-1 winners at the Valley.

4. Christian Eriksen (Tottenham) vs Manchester United – January 31, 2018 (10.54 seconds)

The former Tottenham playmaker threw United’s game plan out of the window after 11 seconds.

Eriksen, as he has so many times during his career, ghosted the United defence and was in the right place at the right time to stab home a loose ball after some woeful defending from Jose Mourinho’s then side.

The Red Devils were unable to recover as Spurs ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at Wembley.

3. Alan Shearer (Newcastle) vs Manchester City – January 18, 2003 (10.52 seconds)

Newcastle icon Shearer charged down goalkeeper Carlo Nash’s attempted clearance before converting the loose ball from a narrow angle.

You wouldn’t expect anything less from the Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer.

2. Ledley King (Tottenham) vs Bradford City –  December 9, 2000 (9.82 seconds)

Another notable Spurs mention, this time from a club legend.

King lashed a deflected shot in from 20 yards at Valley Parade to earn him the fastest goal title – one which he held for 19 years.

1. Shane Long (Southampton) vs Watford – April 23 2019 (7.69 seconds)

Irishman Long showed killer instinct to give Southampton the lead, blocking a Craig Cathcart clearance from a Watford kick off before hooking the ball over Ben Foster.

It looked like the visitors would hold on to a valuable three points before Andre Gray struck deep into stoppage time to earn the Hornets a share of the spoils.
