Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho heaps praise on ‘precious’ match-winner Heung-min Son after victory at Aston Villa

Jose Mourinho heaped praise on Heung-min Son following Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The South Korea forward netted a dramatic 94th minute goal, his second strike of the afternoon, to move Spurs up to fifth in the Premier League table.

It was Son’s 50th league goal for Tottenham as he struck for the fifth consecutive game with a first-half rebound from a missed penalty.

Mourinho told talkSPORT: “The penalty, of course, it’s good that he was fast and smart enough to attack the second ball and from a difficult angle to score was very good.

“It was a very important moment, minute 44 or 45, it was fantastic.

“But then in the end of the game, in a difficult situation, for a striker to run 40 metres to face the keeper and to be cool enough to put the ball in the net, of course, is precious.”

A Toby Alderweireld own goal gave Villa an early lead, before the Belgium defender atoned for his error by levelling the score at the other end.

Son was quickest to react to his own missed penalty to give Tottenham a half-time lead following VAR’s decision to award a spot-kick for a Bjorn Engels foul on Steven Bergwijn.

Engels headed in a Jack Grealish corner to equalise for the hosts shortly after the break, before Son capitalised on a defensive error from the Villa goalscorer to take the three points back to north London.

Mourinho insists Tottenham earned their ‘luck’ at Villa Park.

He said: “I can say two bad goals to concede, yes. I can say we didn’t start very well. I can say that Villa were stronger, faster and more intense than us in the beginning of the game.

“But I can also say the boys were fantastic in their reaction and especially in the second-half.

“After the 2-2, we took our risks and changed our way of playing and put two guys through the middle to explore a little bit of space and a little bit of fatigue.

“So I think in the end people can say it’s a little bit of luck because of the moment we scored, but luck means a lot of work before that and the boys worked so much.”

Son had other opportunities to win the game earlier, but he was thwarted by Pepe Reina on two occasions.

And while Son was being interviewed by Tottenham’s media team, Mourinho cheekily asked: “You speaking about the goals he scored or the goals he missed?”
