Eddie Hearn has revealed they have received an approach from the Democratic Republic of Congo to potentially stage an Anthony Joshua fight.

The African nation – formerly known as Zaire – famously hosted one of boxing’s greatest ever events in 1974 when Muhammad Ali shocked the world by beating George Foreman.

Now, for the first time in 45 years, a world title bout is set to return to DR Congo on January 31 when Ilunga Makabu faces Michal Cieslak for the vacant WBC cruiserweight belt.

And they don’t intend to stop there, with AJ in their sights.

Joshua fought outside of the UK twice in 2019, taking his show to New York, USA and Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.

His team have insisted they are open to more bouts across the world.

Hearn told talkSPORT’s Dom McGuinness: “Definitely the preference is a UK fight next, but I do believe that – having sold out Wembley twice and the Millennium Stadium twice – he still wants to look at other regions.

“When we talk about Democratic Republic of Congo, we kind of joke about that, but the idea behind that event is to stage it in the same arena in Kinshasa that the ‘Rumble the Jungle’ was held at.

“Forgetting money, because it’s not as lucrative as a Middle East fight, to do that on the résumé is something quite special.

“Right now we just wanna get it in the diary, next one, Kubrat Pulev, end of May, early June in London. That’s what we want.”
