Virgil van Dijk was in Marcus Rashford’s pocket and Liverpool ‘bottled it’ against Man United, claims Adrian Durham

“They went through Marcus Rashford’s pockets afterwards…Virgil Van Dijk was in there.” Well, that’s what Adrian Durham reckons…

The Talksport host heaped huge praise on Manchester United striker Rashford following the Red Devils’ draw to Liverpool on Sunday.

Rashford found the net to give his side a lead in a game few gave them a chance of getting something out of, but Adam Lallana’s late goal saw the contest finish 1-1.

The result is a much-needed boost for Rashford and United, who have been off the boil this season.

The young England striker has come in for some criticism for his perceived lack of goalscoring instinct before the match.

However, he acquitted himself very well in the game by getting on the scoresheet and being a pest for the Liverpool defence.

There was even a moment in the first-half where Rashford out-muscled the Dutchman to the floor, which impressed the Old Trafford faithful.

And Durham was equally impressed by Rashford’s display and suggested last season’s PFA Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or contender Van Dijk would have struggled to get any sleep on Sunday night, due to the problems he faced.

Durham also called on Rashford to put in performances like that more consistently.

He told talkSPORT: “They went through his [Rashford’s] pockets afterwards…

“Few sweets, wad of cash, couple of phone numbers…Virgil van Dijk was in there as well, extraordinary.

“Left him on his backside and got the better of him, worried him.

“I doubt Virgil van Dijk slept last night, Rashford caused him that many problems.

“He worked so hard, you could see he was run into the ground when he was taken off.

“He was taken off when they were 1-0 up and what do you know, they didn’t go onto win it.

“I thought he was really good and answered a lot of critics but he needs to be more consistent.”

The result ended Liverpool’s winning start to the 2019/20 Premier League season while their lead at the top of the table was cut to six points following Manchester City’s win at the weekend.

Liverpool were heavy favourites going into the game at Old Trafford and failure to win would have been seen as two points dropped before the match.

Durham added: “Liverpool did bottle it. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.

“It’s a big game for them and they probably played the occasion rather than the team that was in front of them.

“Even on paper before kick-off, that Man United team was there for the taking.”
