Gary Neville slams Manchester United board and says club have gone backwards under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Gary Neville believes Manchester United have gone backwards under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but has blamed the club’s board for their decline.

The Red Devils suffered their third Premier League defeat of the season after losing 1-0 to struggling Newcastle on Sunday.

Matty Longstaff’s goal heaped more pressure on United boss Solskjaer, who spent almost £150million on summer arrivals Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James.

But Old Trafford legend Neville insists the United board ‘need to hold their nerve’ and back Solskjaer.

He told Sky Sports: “The quality’s not right and they have taken a step backwards. They’d be better off with [Marouane] Fellaini up front with [Romelu] Lukaku, [Alexis] Sanchez up front, there’s no doubt.

“They now need to fix a style and fix a way of recruiting. It is going to be painful and the board are going to need to hold their nerve.

“They [the board] have cocked it up over many years. They’re responsible for this. They’ve gone for completely different styles of managers.

“They’ve now gone with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a completely different style. If you change direction as a board every two years and you invest £250million along the way with each manager, you’re going to have big problems.”

United are 12th and two points above the relegation zone after winning just two of their opening eight Premier League games.

The club have spent big money on the likes of Angel Di Maria, Sanchez and Lukaku, while sacking managers David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho in the past six years.

And Neville reckons his old club are paying for ‘poor decisions’ that have been made at board level.

He added: “Manchester United are now getting the pain they deserve for poor decisions at board level.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to make sure the clean-up job he’s doing, which needs to be done at this football club for the mess that’s come before him, he needs to make sure that he’s somebody that actually gets the opportunity to spend that £250million, £300million that the others have had to spend.”
