Five players Tottenham should sign to save their season and start a revolution

Things went from bad to worse for Tottenham this week as they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Colchester United.

The Essex side successfully outwitted their Premier League opponents and allowed just four shots on target in 90 minutes before winning the penalty shoot-out.

After the match, manager Mauricio Pochettino claimed the club would be looking to make moves in the winter and summer transfer windows

“We need time, we are going to have time to fix that. January is going to be a good opportunity to try and fix this type of situation and sort it.

“Then the next transfer window, again. That’s the problem when something happens and you cannot control – this type of situation can arrive. I’m more than happy to be in that situation, it means we are human.

“To keep the successful period in football you need to be different every single season and act differently and find different solution. Maybe we need to do something different and we are trying to find the way to start to perform and get the results we expect.”

But having signed four players in 2019, who could Tottenham Hotspur look to sign in January? talkSPORT.com takes a look below.

Youcef Atal (Nice)

With Serge Aurier one of those who expressed a wish to leave last summer and Kyle Walker-Peters failing to deliver on his potential it’s time for a new right-back to replace Kieran Trippier

One of the finest youngsters in Europe last season, Atal has shown incredible versatility in the current campaign by starring at left wing.

He even scored a winning goal in the role against Dijon but don’t worry, it’s not a permanent switch.

Arsenal legend and Nice boss Patrick Vieira is just extremely prepared to play him out of possession such are his qualities.

“What you need is trying to find the balance of the team. For Youcef, of course, he can play different positions,” Vieira said.

“It is true that the one I prefer is also right back I’m very happy with his performances when he plays in front.”

The fleet-footed dribbler joining Spurs would give them a player similar to Kyle Walker in his prime for the club.

And Atal isn’t likely to chuck away his defensive role either, he’s admitted he prefers it at right-back.

“I prefer to play right-back but the coach needs me as left-winger or right-winger, I can help out,” he said.

“I prefer to play right back because I have a lot of experiences in this position.”

Paulo Dybala (Juventus)

Tottenham nearly got this deal over the line in the summer but failed at the final hurdle as they were unable to sort out the finer details of a transfer.

Images rights issues were a stumbling block and it’s likely we could see Spurs return for the Argentine in a couple of months.

Dybala continues to be on the fringes in Turin as he doesn’t fit in with Maurizio Sarri’s ideas.

He’s spent time in a front two and a front three but is yet to score or assist in just 166 minutes of action, while he only made it off the bench for 10 minutes in the Champions League.

Pochettino could get plenty out of the Argentine international given his keenness on using narrow attacking midfielders behind Harry Kane, instead of wingers.

He’s capable of being a playmaker as well as a goal scorer so should go someway to helping Giovani Lo Celso replacing Christian Eriksen.

Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig)

The glory days of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen being an impenetrable brick wall ahead of Hugo Lloris could well be over. If they are then a centre-back is a must-sign in January.

Davinson Sanchez’s development has stalled considerably while Juan Foyth is still just 21 and showing potential, despite a slightly maverick attitude at points.

Upamecano is very much the real deal at just 20-years-old, already this campaign he’s looking to continue his form after an impressive European Under-21 Championship.

He and team-mate Ibrahima Konate can both break lines with passes and dribbles, which is something Spurs could really do with given their slow play this term.

He also reads the game superbly thanks to his excellent in-game intelligence.

Allow him to learn the ropes alongside the Belgians for six months and then start him from 2020/21 onwards.

Sander Berge (KRC Genk)

Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama started against Colchester United in the Carabao Cup but are very much fringe stars now, although the former can perhaps feel unlucky about this given his previous importance to the team.

Wanyama was almost sold in the summer and could well go in January as he looks incredibly limited following injuries.

A replacement is vital with Tottenham looking weak in front of their back-four right now.

Berge could be a fine long-term option given his emergence in Belgium.

An strong defensive midfielder who reads the game magnificently and also a fine ball-player, he’s got bags of potential and a January would be perfect to help him acclimatise to English football.

Leandro Trossard also came from Genk and has done well for Brighton, albeit in a different position, so hopefully Berge can adapt similarly.

Florentino Luis (Benfica)

Another youngster Spurs should consider in midfield is 20-year-old Portuguese ace Luis who continues where he left off last season.

He excelled, along with Joao Felix, and remains an fine prospect without his fellow wonderkid ahead of him.

He’s been nicknamed ‘The Octopus’ thanks to his ability to recover the ball, either through tackles of interceptions.

Already this season he’s dispossessed opponents on average 3.5 times per game and interception the ball 4.3 times.

He combines this with a 89.8 per cent pass completion rate and is already wanted by Manchester United and Man City.

Florentino Luis would cost a hefty fee, like Felix, but it looks like he may well be worth the money already.
