Perspective

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
~ Wayne Dyer
Perspective changes the way we see things. In turn, it changes the way we feel, think, act, and manifest. When I was young I was told a story about perspective that has always stayed with me. Personally, I like the version I was told but it isn't received well by most people so, instead, I came across this version which I think still illustrates the point clearly.
"Two twin brothers grew up with an alcoholic father. One of them became an alcoholic just like his father while the other refrained from alcohol. The alcoholic brother struggled in life and when asked why he was an alcoholic he stated: 'I followed my father's example'. The non-alcoholic brother saw success in many areas of his life and when asked why he wasn't an alcoholic he stated: 'I followed my father's example'.
This story illustrates many things. But what it really shows us is the power of perspective. We have two people who are having the exact same experiences and navigating the exact same circumstances. And one chooses to be a victim of those circumstances and the other chooses to empower himself.

But, It's Not My Fault!

Okay, it's not my fault I was dealt this shitty hand is such a hard truth to navigate with some people. Primarily for the same reasons I chose not to tell my version of the perspective story - folks are just too sensitive and some lack critical thinking skills. It is true, we can't control what others do to us and we can't control the circumstances surrounding our birth. However, we do have control over ourselves, over our destination, wants, dreams, and aspirations. Sometimes others' tell us we don't have control; they are lying - that's an illusion they are propagating. Despite those who tell us we are powerless, we are very much opposite of that, creators. When we come to that realization we are empowered to do what is right for us. And, we are empowered to empower others. Once this perspective is changed our conversation changes from Why Me? to Try Me!

I Make My Own Way

This is a leadership mentality; it is the attitude we all think we have but only some of us actually do. A true leader first leads themselves - including empowering themselves, valuing themselves, and guiding their own destiny's. Leaders have relationships which add value to their lives, they don't need relationships to have value. In fact, everything a leader does is to add value to their lives. Leaders also add value to other people's lives. Where we tend to go wrong in this area is to approach it from an outside perspective - leading by command opposed to by example. When we look at life from a leadership role our perspective changes on events. Now we become the Try Me type opposed to the Why Me? type. Try me people take ownership of their lives. So, no matter what happened before now, is seen as an event on their journey, not a crippling prison.

Feel The Power

I remember at one point of my healing journey constantly receiving the message 'hurt people, hurt people'. I was receiving this message in so many different ways. But, it got me thinking. If hurt people hurt other people then it stands that empowered people will empower others. This shift in perspective helped me to understand so many other things, it became a building block in the foundation of my healing journey. So next time you find yourself falling victim to your circumstances when you are saying 'Why me?' flip your perspective and force yourself to see the value, take responsibility for your own destiny, say 'TRY ME!!!'
