5 Apron Styles To Consider Just In Time For Holiday Cooking

Now that the holidays are here, many of us will be spending a lot of time in the kitchen!

It’s true in professional and home kitchens alike: the chef or cook who doesn’t wear an Apron is going to do a lot more laundry.

The right Kitchen Apron protects your clothing from splashes and spills—and that may make you feel freer in the kitchen.

But of the five basic apron styles, which is right for you?

We spoke with friends at Chef Uniforms to get their insights. Read on!

1. The Bib Apron

Is it any surprise that the most protective style is also the most popular?

A bib apron loops around the neck, covering you from chest to knee. (Chef Uniforms also has a shorter bib apron, if that’s your preference.)

So whether you’re pitting cherries, kneading bread dough, or pan-frying a delicate filet of sole, you’re safe from splatters.

2. The Waist Apron

Here’s a kitchen apron for minimalists.

It’s narrow—falling from the waist to the upper or mid-thigh.

So while it’s great for ease of movement, it doesn’t cover much.

What it lacks in coverage, it makes up for in pockets.

Utensils, pens, straws, notepads- this apron carries them all.

3. The Bistro Apron

The most sophisticated of the waist apron styles, the bistro is generally considered a “front of house” option.

This apron is long—usually falling below the knee.

But while it will protect your pants, it won’t keep you clean above the waist.

4. The Four-Way Apron

This apron has a few tricks up its sleeve (not literally).

If you tend to wipe your hands or utensils on your apron or move between the back and front of the house frequently (and want to look as neat as possible), this is your apron.

Simply untie, refold, and voilà! Clean apron.

5. The Cobbler Apron

Our Chef Uniforms source has a sister who once got spaghetti sauce on the back of her white sweater.

Guess who got a cobbler apron for her birthday?

This apron covers the front and the back—which takes its usefulness beyond the kitchen.

From housekeeping to pre-schools this apron is perfect for keeping clean!

And because cobblers need tools, it has pockets too.

Since the main function of a kitchen apron is to protect your clothes, coverage is critical.

We’re not just talking length—you also want to make sure the apron has a generous wrap and ties that are long enough.

Coverage and comfort: equal partners in creating a kitchen apron you want to wear.
