I don’t share a lot of my own clips for Wednesday Word, but this one is an important one to share.

I posted a clip on TikTok because God has been working on me about my schedule, which is currently packed to the brim. The problem is, I’m only one person and there’s so much that can be done before you: (1) run yourself into the ground, (2) end up not giving your best because you’re spread so thin, and (3) end up cutting time spent with God. At least from my experiencee.

I liken it to the popular story of Mary and Martha in the Bible (Luke 10:38-42). When Jesus went to visit the sisters along with their brother Lazarus, Martha went into full prep mode. And understandably so. Not only is hospitality a huge thing in Jewish culture but she had the MESSIAH at her house! I’d be freaking out trying to get everything together too!

Instead of helping Martha, Mary simply sat at the feet of Jesus, listening to whatever He had to say. And that made Martha some kind of MAD. She even asked Jesus to ask Mary to help. However, Jesus kindly explained to Martha that, while her hospitality was appreciated, that wasn’t the most important thing. The most important thing was to spend time with Him, not spending time worrying about all of the little details. I think, in the end, that probably gave Martha a little sigh of relief, because she could just relax in the presence of Jesus.

I’ve been realizing lately that I’M MARTHA. A lot of us can be at times. We get so caught up in the busyness of life that we sometimes put having time with God on the back burner. God has been convicting me about this so badly lately. For any relationship –platonic, romantic, or familial –to grow, you have to spend time talking and hanging out with them. God wants to have that kind of relationship with us, too! But that means making the proper time and cutting out all of this busy work that often isn’t all that important.
