Energy 101: Healing the Chakras

Welcome back to Energy 101!

Today we’re going to move further into the chakras and talk about how to heal them.

We’ve learned how each Chakra expresses itself when both balanced and blocked. Blocked simply means a faulty energy flow – the energetic flow is out of balance. This imbalance can show up as either an underactive or overactive chakra.

Finding out whether the blocked chakra is underactive or overactive is important when moving towards healing because our bodies want to be in energetic balance. If the energy is moving too far in either direction within a chakra, it’s counterproductive to our energy bodies and the healing process itself. For example, an underactive chakra will send its energy away from that part of the body and into an already balanced, or even overactive, chakra, causing more blockage and imbalance.

So, how does each chakra express underactivity or overactivity?

Root Chakra

Underactive:  Lack of sense of security, codependency, inability to become grounded, abandonment issues, depression, lack of stamina or drive, little boundaries

Overactive: Materialistic, greedy, resistant to change, fearful, nervous, insecurity, negativity, impatience, aggression

Sacral Chakra

Underactive: Unemotional, closed off, lack of self-esteem or self-worth, stiff, frigid, pessimism or depression, sexual or pleasurable guilt/shame, lack of creativity, sluggishness

Overactive: Overemotional, moody, dramatic, excessive emotional attachment or neediness, sexual addictions

Solar Plexus

Underactive: Passivity, indecisiveness, lack of self-control or self-confidence, seeking external approval, worrying about what others think of them, victim mentality

Overactive: Judgmental, critical, domineering, perfectionism, aggression/anger, self-righteous (“I’m always right”), bullying behavior, on a “power trip”

Heart Chakra

Underactive: Cold, emotionally distant, lacking ability to forgive or open up to others, loneliness, feeling of being unloved or inferior, lack of empathy

Overactive: Clingy or suffocating in love, lack of sense of self within relationships, lacking boundaries, possessiveness, feelings of superiority, jealousy, extreme emotional reactions, lack of self-control over emotions

Throat Chakra

Underactive: Shyness, difficulty speaking truth, inability to express needs or views, unable to stand up for self, forgetful

Overactive: Overly talkative, inability to listen to others, condescending and critical, loud and shrill, over analyzing or avoiding vulnerability of emotions, dishonesty, possibly verbally abusive

Brow Chakra

Underactive: Rigid thinking, closed off to new ideas or excessive reliance on authority, insensitivity, lack of connection to and distrustful of intuition, inability to imagine or visualize things, memory issues, attachment to past, anxious

Overactive: Overactive imagination, lives in fantasy world, lacks judgment or sympathy, unable to focus

Crown Chakra

Underactive: Lack of direction or meaning in life, no sense of spirituality, disconnected from self and others, distrust or lack of faith, excessive attachment to material things, rigidity or selfishness, inability to see the bigger picture

Overactive: Addiction to spirituality, ignorance of reality and physical needs, obsessive thoughts, “head in the clouds”

Now that we know how overactive and underactive energy shows up within the chakras, we can move into the fun part – how to balance and heal them!

There are multitudes of ways to heal our chakras, so I’ll try my best to keep it simple for the sake of time. The most important thing to remember when working towards healing them is to always start at the base, or Root chakra. Most of the time, any imbalances we find in the upper chakras stem from a faulty energy flow within the Root. From an energetic standpoint, this is where we draw in our life-force energy. If we’re not properly grounded in our Root chakra, we cannot properly balance and heal the others.

Healing the Root Chakra

Mantra: “I Am”

Color: Red – Bring more red into your surroundings. Light red candles, wear red clothing, and meditating on the color red will help get this energy flowing.

Organs: Large intestine, colon, adrenals, bladder – Be sure that these are in proper health.

Nutrition: Red foods – apples, strawberries, red onions, red cabbage, beets – also foods that take “root” as well as proteins to ground the energy.

Aromatherapy: Sandalwood, cedarwood, ginger, myrrh, frankincense, rosemary, cinnamon, patchouli – preferably spicy and earthy scents.

Crystals: Bloodstone, garnet, red jasper, red carnelian, obsidian, hematite – Working with these during meditation or simply carrying them around will also help balance the Root. I plan to do a separate post on crystals in the future!

Activities: Nature walks and sits, dancing, squats, yoga, going barefoot, cleaning, cooking, caring for plants, meditating on red.

Affirmation: “I am balanced. I am safe and secure. My Root chakra functions perfectly. I am grounded.”

It’s important to note here that if you are dealing with an overactive Root chakra, stay away from those things that will further stimulate the energy. Proper sleep, diet, and exercise will help stabilize this energy. I also suggest that with that, move into the next chakra that needs balancing – especially one that is underactive. Focusing energy here will help pull away any excess energy in the Root and move it into the energy center(s) which are deficient. This also goes for any other overactive chakra.

Healing the Sacral Chakra

Mantra: “I Feel”

Color: Orange

Organs: Reproductive organs, sex organs, kidneys, bladder

Nutrition: Orange foods and spices – oranges, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, mangoes, turmeric, ginger, melon, carrots – as well as sweets and lots of water.

Crystals: Carnelian, orange calcite, moonstone

Activities: Creative pursuits, healthy and pleasurable sex, gardening, eating tasty food that enlivens the senses, dancing, swimming, meditating on orange – all sensual and feeling activities.

Affirmation: “I love, nourish, and enjoy my body. I have healthy boundaries and am open to experiencing the present moment fully and passionately. I allow myself to experience pleasure and express my emotions easily and positively.”

Healing the Solar Plexus

Activities: Sun-bathing, sitting around a fire, sports, high energy exercise, laughing, mediating on yellow, making goal lists and crossing them off.

As we’ve learned, there is a constant cycle and flow of energy happening in every moment, both around us and within us. Our chakras are constantly in a process of change, and so the process of healing is never-ending. I’m not saying this to deter you in any way, in fact, the opposite. Becoming more aware of how blocked energy shows up within us and learning how to heal and balance our chakras makes it easier to both manifest our goals as well as step more fully into our energetic power. You’ll notice more acutely when one is becoming out of balance and be able to make the necessary changes or take the necessary steps to bring your energy back into harmony, catching it before it becomes too much of either. This ability opens space for owning our power and harnessing it in a positive and productive way – another post for another day!

This is such an intriguing realm of being and I always enjoy the dialogue that can come from it! Let me know if you have any thoughts on this below. I love hearing from you!
