Indian Education system-Should we rethink???

Education and its importance is something that doesn't need any explanation. However, it is something that is deliberately ignored in our country, by our people. And another problem is the present trend in most of the middle classes- an excessive focus on their child's Education which often ends up in a disaster. So in this post, I want to dwell on these chronic issues.

Education system defines a society and thus a nation. The morals that people uphold, the patriotism, scientific bent of people, the amount of workforce that will be available to a nation, the amount of wealth that a country holds ........education has a direct bearing on all these things. The growth of an individual and his outlook on life, for a majority of people, is defined by their school days. The exceptional performance of one either good or bad, if we track down for clues, we can find them in one's school days.So what is the importance that we must attach to something that will have a direct bearing on a person throughout his life? It is immense!!!
WHAT ARE THE GOALS FOR US AS A NATION?
The Nazi and fascist regimes had an excessive emphasis on policing schools. They were also into designing books in a way to suit their goals. The teachers were strictly monitored so that they do not pass any anti-government opinions. Why did they do that?
After all, for most of us, education is just another thing in one's life for getting a decent job and it ends there. But the Nazis and fascists didn't think so.They always wanted to build their society in the lines of their ideology and they were serious about it.The merits of their ideology are definitely a point of debate so let us not venture into that.

Though things are changing, our education system is almost a replica of what the British wanted us to do, but not without some merits. The government run schools are in nowhere near to world class, rather, national standards (with exceptions). There is a massive commercialisation in the education system which spreads a notion that good education is for the rich and elite and the poor obviously deserves the education that they actually get now. These are the seeds that we are going to reap.Ten years down the line, there will be still massive class differences(assuaged slightly wth economic progress) but the psychic differences-domination and subjugation do not end.
Besides this, the private school system is so damaged to an extent where even a good relationship between a teacher and a student is not possible. There is no emotional integration between a student and school. All that is there, is an economic integration and nothing else.Is that a kind of education system that we bequeathed from our ancestors??
The inherent ills of our education system are reflected in

  • The number of school going students committing suicides every year.
  • The psychological problems faced by many well paid employees.
  • The psychopathic behavior often exhibited among those so-called HIGHLY INTELLIGENT STUDENTS.
  •  The number of growing educated criminals.
And though it seems to have a little significance to many of the middle class in India,  there is a madness or the rat race for Medicine and Engineering as if there is no other opportunity or a proscription is imposed on people.Art and Culture, Humanities etc., are many things which are almost becoming extinct(with some exceptions) in school discourses.
So as a society are we aiming to kill our rich heritage or are we machines to perform whatever the market wants us to do, are we aiming for a society where Darwinism triumphs, are we a society who enjoys stark economic disparities, are we such cowards who cannot think of experimenting and researching so that a significant pool of knowledge and discovery can be contributed to the society? Are we so cruel to make those little kids sit for hours to undergo the traumatic tuition for medicine and engineering entrances for wich they do not know the definitions at least? Are we ...............where should I end? Maybe it's time for us think on the wrongs done to our society by our ignorance. It is the time we rethink our aims and aspirations so that we build a resilient, confident and a STRONG INDIA!!!
Jai Hind!
Bye.
