This blog is written by our expert teacher, Anna-China. Anna-China has 14+ year managing IELTS testing for the University of Technology, Sydney and is an E2 expert for IELTS, TOEFL and CELPIP.

There’s so much exam-related information out there, it can be quite confusing. Here you´ll find reliable and truly helpful tips to get 100+ TOEFL score.

Tip 1 – Work on Grammar and Vocabulary

Don’t forget Toefl is an English language test. You´ll be tested on how much English you know. You´ll probably agree that all languages are about words (vocabulary) and how you connect those words (grammar).

Master TOEFL vocabulary

To get a high TOEFL score, you need to have a high range of English vocabulary. Knowing different words allows you to more readily understand the English you read and hear and gives you the tools to express yourself more effectively in speech and writing.

A good way to study vocabulary is to use flashcards. You can either make your own paper cards or opt for digital cards. Anki is a free computer program you can use to create, download, and practise flashcards.

Master TOEFL grammar

To achieve high TOEFL score, you´ll also need to prove your knowledge of English grammar. You´re most likely asking yourself: How do I do that?

Never fear – we´ve got you covered.

For some fun ways to work on vocabulary and grammar, check out our Everyday English podcast designed by expert TOEFL teachers at E2. If you want to improve your grammar, vocabulary, and even pronunciation in a fun and interactive way, this podcast is for you! Take a listen today.

Tip 2 – Personalise Your Study Plan

Organise your TOEFL study for the test by setting some goals. To help you, we’ve created this free 2023 Study Goals printout. Simply download it today and fill in your daily and weekly goals for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking or TOEFL score. Then keep your plan nearby and use it to check your progress against your goals.

On the printout, you will also see a checklist section for each skill. You can use this section to put in more specific tasks that you have to focus on to improve your weaknesses.

You´re probably wondering how you can identify the weaknesses that may cause you to lose your TOEFL score. First, check your Reading and Listening answers in detail. After all, we learn from our mistakes. Consider the following important questions:

A) Are you really working on your mistakes and learning from them?

TOEFL practice tests are useful to help you improve your TOEFL score, however, this will only happen if you analyse your mistakes carefully, comparing your answer with the correct answer to understand what went wrong.

You may have made a mistake because of a particular word or phrase, which means you should dedicate more time to work on expanding your vocabulary. You may have misunderstood information, which is related to verb tense, or you missed a key detail such as the conjunction connecting ideas. For Listening, if you cannot keep up with the speed of the recording and the amount of information, it means you need more practice listening to authentic English material.

Taking the time to analyse your weaknesses and learning from them will certainly contribute to improving your TOEFL scores.

B) Are you using high-quality TOEFL resources?

If not, your study sessions won’t be productive nor effective. E2 has a full TOEFL test preparation course available to help you, with material designed by E2 Test Prep experts, based on the official ETS information and the TOEFL iBT exam. The content focuses on developing the skills you need to achieve high TOEFL scores.

Once you are feeling confident with your skills, consider taking a mock test.

Tip 3 – Become an Expert Note Taker

You’ll have to take notes in each section as you take the TOEFL iBT. Note-taking is allowed because it’s an important skill you need for taking university or college courses. As you study, practice taking notes on the main idea of what you read and hear, as well as on the main details. Do this throughout your day as you listen to news reports, read websites, and watch TV.

Create your own shorthand for frequently used words, phrases or names. For example, it’s useful to use symbols and abbreviations when speed is essential. You should work out a system you’ll remember and use it consistently.

Useful Symbols

Here are some standard symbols and abbreviations you may wish to use:

+ – and

ASAP – as soon as possible.

@ – at

bc – because

b4 – before

eg – for example

w/ – with

w/o – without
