What you need to know about Australian employer sponsorship visas (482 Temporary Skill Shortage stream)

The 482 steam was introduced to prioritise the permanent residency pathways for skills and occupations each Australian state could classify as in high demand. That’s how the Short Term Skill Occupation List (STSOL) and the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) were introduced.

Any 482 visa holder has full-time work privileges as long as they maintain an employment contract with their sponsor, however, only 482 visa holders with occupations nominated in the Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List can apply for permanent residency in all the Australian territory after 4 years.

With the new announcement from the federal government to support skilled migration, the door has certainly been opened to discuss enabling permanent residency pathways for 482 visa holders. Many sectors of the economy have been requesting it and the employer-sponsored process to select ideal candidates is rigorous.

What are the requirements for Australian employer sponsorship visas?

1. Be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor

Not every employer can be a sponsor, the business must fit certain criteria that go from staff numbers to annual revenue to be eligible. Check all the details here.

2. Have the right skills to do the job

Every applicant needs to provide a skills assessment from an entity approved by the federal government, each occupation has its own assessment entity, for example, every engineering skills assessment is performed by Engineers Australia.

You can see all the requirements for your occupation on the Department of Home Affairs official website.

3. Meet the relevant English language requirements

While some occupations have higher English band score conditions, it is compulsory for every 482 visa candidate to demonstrate their English proficiency so they can legitimately do the job they are being sponsored for.

How to demonstrate my English proficiency?

The only way to accomplish this for Australian skilled migration purposes is to sit and pass any of the internationally recognised English tests such as IELTS, PTE, and others.
