İngiliz dilinde her ismin önüne konulan tanım harfidir- Eğer isim sessiz harfle başlarsa, (a) kulla­nılır. Örnek:

Eğer isim sesli harfle başlarsa, (an) kullanılır.

Örnek:

an arm                          bir kol

an egg                           bir yumurta

an animal bir hayvan

Egzersiz 1.—

Arif has a Book. – Selma has an apple. – Reşat is a boy- – Leylâ is a girl. – Adil has an orange – The orange is a fruit.

Adil has a book and a pencil. – Leylâ ise a girl and Reşat ise a boy.

İngilizcede iyelik (of) ile anlatılır. Örnek:

Bunun kısa şekli, ismin sonuna (’s) eklemekle de olur, o zaman (of the) kalkar. Örnek:

the friend of Adil – Adil’s friend: Adilin arkadaşı the shoes of Tom – Tom’s shoes: Tom’un ayakkabıları the books of the girl – the girl’s books: Kızın kitabı
