Your First Class

You're so happy because you're accepted as an English teacher in your favorite institution. You've talked to the director, the academic team leader and you've observed some classes. Yet, you actually don't have any Teaching experience before and that makes you panicky! No worries! Simply follow basic guideline before you go to Class and you should be fine...

1. Know your class.
Find out the type and level of your class. Is it children, pre-teen, or adult class? Elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, or advance level?

How many students are there in your class? Are they generally strong, weak, or just okey? Any students that you need to be aware of?

Talk to previous teachers who handled the class to find out the information above. You can also check the folder of the class you're going to teach.

2. Check the material you're going to teach. Again, go to class folder to find out the basic information and talk to the previous teacher for the detail one. That way, you don't end up doing the same worksheets or activities.

3. Make a Lesson plan for your class. Draft your stages and activities that will be carried out in class, from the easiest to the most difficult and from the most controlled to freer one. With lesson plan on hand you'll deliver the lesson more neatly and smoothly flowing.

5. Finalize your lesson plan by consulting it with academic leader. Then, discuss any matter from the three points above that you are not sure of.

6. Practice your teaching. Pretend you're teaching in your class. Rehearse the steps you have to do and what you have to say. The more you do this the more prepared you feel and that's a good feeling.
Alright, there's no more reason why you should be stressful teaching your first class. Come on, make it first class!

Happy teaching, teachers!
