10 Years of SD Comic-Con Reporting

San Diego Comic-Con

I’ve covered San Diego Comic-Con for local and national publication since 2010, and one thing I’ve learned is that if you want access, interviews, and passes, it helps to have a page showing proof of your past work.

(Please note that in 2010, San Diego CityBeat experienced a terrible change in ownership that essentially shut down the publication’s website at the beginning of the pandemic. Hopefully one day I can recover the links or scan in some print copies.)

I’ve also inserted at the bottom an archive of silly listicles and other random blog posts I wrote for Sci-Fi Wire/Blastr/SyFyWire over the years.

Blastr.com

After writing for a few years about TV and DVD releases for Film.com in the mid-2000s, I began contributing to the SyFy network’s beast of a blog, Blastr.com (although it was called SciFiWire.com when I started, and has since been renamed SyFyWire again). Mostly I wrote lists, and quick hits whenever I caught sci-fi intersecting with politics and current events.

Here are a few of my favorites, in order of number of items on each list:

If one politician has his way, sci-fi’s gonna be mandatory in school

Four Labels from the Bruce Campbell’s Soup Company

Happy 25th anniversary, Thunderdome! 8 reasons we still love you

13 surprising ways sci-fi collided with DC politics

13 worker revolts and labor union uprisings from sci-fi history

14 strange sci-fi candidates who campaigned in REAL elections

15 Dangerous (and dumb) oil disasters in sci-fi (During the Deepwater Horizon spill)

20 psychedelic strains of Star Wars-themed marijuana (And the sequel: 12 super-powerful strains of comic-book-themed cannabis)
