AMERICANS KEEPING THEIR VEHICLES LONGER

Helped by improved quality, Americans are keeping their vehicles longer, notes Grumpy Editor.

Average vehicle age, rising steadily over the past 15 years, now is a little over 12 years, finds IHS Markit Ltd., an American-British information provider based in London.

The trend to a longer age accelerated during the pandemic.

Twenty years ago it was common for a car to change hands once or twice over its 100,000-mile run, says Todd Campau of HIS Markit.  That compares with today’s cars with multiple owners lasting 200,000 miles or more, he adds.
