It is always a pleasure and enlightening experience to meet Professor Ravinder Sharma.
I recently met him at the annual exhibition organised by him to celebrate the joyous occasion of Mahashivrartri. Professor Sharma, a former professor at the Government College of Arts, Chandigarh and who now runs Ravinder Sharma Art Academy, dedicated the exhibition to his mother.
The themes of the paintings were Lord Shiva in his various moods and forms and the relation with nature and patriotism. Most of the paintings were collages and those made by resist techniques, some using X- ray sheets and mount board with a piece of cardboard.
Giving a demo of his techniques to the Fashion Design students of the Chandigarh University and other visitors, he avidly shared not only his techniques but interspersed with advice on how to be a better human being and the “best artist”.
“Respect and love your parents”, he exhorted as he demonstrated how to create a collage using Fevicol and just three colours – black, white and brown on a mount board.
“Support is the space, the material is the inspiration and the head, the heart and the hand is needed to create art. Sketching is the most important part of art, and the artist should sketch as much as possible.” Using a small piece of oil pastel, he created beautiful artwork.
One should not be afraid of failure, just let the hand be guided by the heart and the head to flow. For collage making, he advised the use of any material, be it printed paper from a magazine, part of a painting, cardboard or brush strokes and lots of imagination.
The artwork of the school- going children of the academy on display were amazing. In one of the paintings, the sky was clearing the way as a soldier carried the National Flag to the top of the hill.
To conclude, Professor Sharma is a teacher par excellence, a great artist and a good human being.
