Chinese New Year is almost here and every member of the family starts the year off right with the right clothes. From head to toe, all clothes and accessories worn on New Year’s Day are often brand new. Some families still wear traditional Chinese clothing, while others wear formal Western clothing, such as suites and dresses. Many also opt to wear lucky red underwear.

However, in a YouTube video entitled “Dad’s New Clothes,” a grandfather made an important point with the clothing he wore for Chinese New Year. The video touched many viewers’ hearts, causing them to better appreciate the importance of family, especially during the Chinese New Year period.
In the video, a young couple and their son visit the father’s parents for the Chinese New Year celebration. The grandparents prepare many of their family’s favorite dishes; however, instead of enjoying the food and interacting with the parents, all three are seen texting messages, playing games, or talking to friends on their mobil devices.
They ignore what the parents are doing until the grandfather reappears in a new outfit. His new outfit is actually a sandwich board in the shape of a mobile phone. He feels that this is the only way to get the their attention. All three felt very ashamed and put down their devices to celebrate the New Year with their parents. The video has sparked widespread discussion on social media.
One viewer commented that he read a news report about one man who confiscates his children’s mobile phones whenever they come home for the Chinese New Year celebration. Another viewer writes:
“There are only a couple of days to celebrate the New Years with parents. Sometimes the time is even shorter. Since parents anticipate the reunion for a long time, children should be mindful about spending quality time with them so that their feelings aren’t hurt like those in the video clip.”
Some viewers suggest that the children should make arrangements to stay with their parents during the Chinese New Year since they are so busy during the rest of the year. Many viewers shared a famous Chinese quote:
“The tree wants to remain still, but the wind does not stop blowing; the children want to take care of their parents, but the parents are gone. So, cherish the time you have with your parents now.”
