A federal grant for bomb-detection dogs at Palm Beach International Airport has been reduced to $252,500 from $1.2 million, according an agenda item for the Palm Beach County Commission.
The Transportation Security Administration informed the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in February that a contract awarded in 2015 for the National Explosives Detection Canine Team Program was terminated due to an internal budgetary issue. The new contract amount went into effect in January.
The $252,500 contract will fund canine teams at PBIA through the end of 2019. The budget change will discussed at the commission's May 17 meeting.
The sheriff's office also has been awarded $150,000 grant for border patrol efforts. The grant runs through end of August 2017.
It was awarded as part of Operation Stonegarden, a federal effort to monitor for illegal border and coastline crossings.
The grant will pay for overtime for officers involved in border patrol efforts.
