Football Manager 2006 Review

Well, here we are again one year on. We worried about how our team would survive without us; how they could manage without their favourite boss, if they could eventually win the league, etc. The addiction only just stopped the other month, and all was fine as we went back to normality. Or so we thought…

Gently slipping the elusive disc out of the delicate box, we slowly placed it in our PC’s drive, and as the inevitable installation process was occurring, we made sure to change our usual garb for something a lot more official; an old fashioned cap and a sheepskin coat, complete with Tunes in the left hand pocket and an endless supply of chewing gum in the other, to calm those match day nerves. Needless to say, when we started, we just couldn’t put it down, and it now looks like we will be hooked for even longer this time round.

See, the thing is, unlike other yearly updates, Football Manager has seemed to have done the impossible by making the game feel completely fresh. This is odd, as the interface has stayed the same basically, the traditional features such as the news ticker are the same really, and even selecting your squad is the same. However, it doesn’t feel the same. Everything feels new and sparkly in this wonderful representation of football management.

The interface, as said before, is basically the same, but it has been tweaked so that amateur players can get into the game quickly and easily without ever feeling alienated by the daunting menus. In fact, the whole game is very user-friendly, with many different user interfaces, clear font on all items, large buttons and easy tactics and squad positioning. Also, training is quite simple, and for the real managerial n00bs, there are options to delegate control with your Assistant Manager.
