Here comes the Donald, India, hat in hand

Sunil Sharan

The people of India dearly love you. This comment of Manmohan Singh to George W. Bush was widely decried by India’s left. I met W. in Austin in January 2000, and he told me he would stick his neck out for India.

He kept his promise to me. Never has an American President done so much for India as W. has, and never has an American president been so badly spurned as W. was. On his official Visit to India as president, he did not even get to address the Indian Parliament for fear that the lefties would heckle him over Iraq.

He had to speak to a contained gathering in Delhi’s Old Fort instead.

Now comes the Donald. First things first, he starts his visit by levying fines on India of hundred of millions of dollars. India has reportedly agreed to sign a multi-billion Navy chopper deal with the U.S. Lockheed Martin of the U.S. has started plugging its F-16s or some variant thereof, promising to somehow co-opt the ill-fated (because it’s been twenty years in the making) Indian Tejas plane into the deal.

Expect the Donald to walk away with defence contracts worth between $5-10 billion.

And if a trade deal is signed, it will be on the Donald’s terms.

And Donald and Melania get to see the Taj, which Barack Obama never got to do, even on two official visits to India. Expect the Donald to gloat about that. Anything Obama couldn’t do and he can is a matter of great exultation.

So the Donald gets to sell his planes and his choppers, he gets a shining trade deal to his liking, he gets to visit the Taj. What does India get in return?

India gets the extra-curricular comments of the U.N. chief Antonio Guterres to intervene on Kashmir. These comments echo the ones made by the Donald several times himself.

Why is the world community so concerned about Kashmir? China has over 11 million Muslim Uighurs in its Xinjiang region, which it has reportedly converted into a vast camp to “reeducate” the Uighurs about their religion.

Ok, ok, China is a tyranny, it can do what it wants. But then let’s see what a democracy like America is up to. History will judge today as a fight between Christianity and Islam. The Donald doesn’t ever stop short of invoking on which side he stands and what he’ll do to the other side, the radical part of that more specifically. But isn’t all of the other side radical or deemed radical?

There was once a U.N. chief who got under the U.S.’s skin. He was the Egyptian Boutros Boutros-Ghali. He didn’t do America’s bidding enough. The U.S. got him fired. Our own Shashi Tharoor blames the Americans for coming in his way of the U.N. chief’s seat. Suffice it to say that the world’s sole superpower still gets to decide who will be the U.N. chief and who will not.

Is the U.N. chief gullible enough to believe that the Kartarpur corridor is purely a gesture of peace from Pakistan and not in some shape or form a way to keep the Khalistani flame burning. PM Modi thanked Imran Khan for Kartarpur. Imran Khan loses no opportunity to abuse PM Modi left, right, and centre almost every single day.

He calls PM Modi a fascist, a this, a that, and much more. Are these gestures of peace. Have you ever heard PM Modi return Khan’s compliments in kind. For sure then, Khan will not be able to stomach it and there might be war.

Pakistan’s even informed commentators like Najam Sethi say that India has annexed Kashmir. How wrong they are! Even Omar Abdullah has conceded that Kashmir had acceded to India in 1947. There is the Instrument of Accession to India of 1947 signed by the then-Maharajah of Kashmir Hari Singh as living proof. You don’t annex something that has already acceded to you, that is already a part of you.

Why doesn’t Antonio Guterres get Imran Khan to stop his constant drivel against PM Modi? Imran foams at the mouth and then talks about peace. Yes, “Pulwama was a false-flag operation of the Indians. And so was 26/11. And so was the attack on the Indian Parliament. And so was the aiding and abetting of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to form Khalistan.” The Indian government has nothing else to do but “attack its own citizens”.

Now if only Imran would pay one-tenth the attention to his own economy that he pays to Kashmir would Pakistan be somewhere.

The Donald, by his numerous actions has shown himself to be unconventional, as well as decisive. India is going to give a lot to him during his visit. He is going to give a lecture to India Inc. But that’s not enough. India has been baying for a U.N. security council permanent seat with veto powers since time immemorial. It’s time the Donald gives India the seat. Otherwise his visit will be fruitless for the Indians.

Until he does so, W. will continue being my favourite American president. Yes, George, I do truly love you.
