The Indian Army has registered the “Intellectual Property Rights” (IPR) of its new design and camouflage pattern uniform, the Ministry of Defense said on November 3.

“The Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trademarks in Kolkata has finished the process of registering the new camouflage pattern and design of the Improved Combat Uniform to show that they belong to the Indian Army,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

On January 15, 2022, the new digital pattern combat uniform for Indian Army soldiers was unveiled. It has a modern look and is made to be useful.

According to information from the Defense Ministry, the fabric is now lighter, stronger, more breathable, dries faster, and is easier to care for. Also, the uniform is different because the women’s combat uniform has been changed to fit their bodies.

Since the design and camouflage pattern are protected by intellectual property rights (IPR), only the Indian Army can make them. Any vendor who makes them without permission will be breaking the law and could face legal consequences.

“Indian Army has exclusive rights to the design and can use a civil action in a court of law to sue people who use it without permission. Infringements can be punished with temporary and permanent injunctions as well as money damages “Added to the statement.

As part of the process of introducing the new pattern of uniform, the Canteen Stores Department (CSD) has already bought and sent 50,000 sets to 15 CSD Depots.

With the help of teachers from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Delhi, workshops are being set up to teach civil and military tailors how to sew the new uniform according to the design.

The bulk purchase of 11.70 lakh sets, which will be given to JCOs and ORs as part of their individual kits (Life Cycle Concept with a 15-month lifespan), is underway and is likely to start in August 2023.
