New CDS Has Asked Three Services To Work On The Creation Of Theatre Commands

The CDS would also go to Jodhpur on October 3 to see the Indian Air Force bring in the Light Combat Helicopter. This would be Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari’s first trip outside of Delhi since taking his new job.

General Anil Chauhan, the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), told the Army, Navy, and Air Force in his first meeting with them that they should move toward creating integrated Theatre Commands.

The CDS would also go to Jodhpur on October 3 to see the Indian Air Force bring in the Light Combat Helicopter. This would be Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari’s first trip outside of Delhi since taking his new job.

In 2019, the job of Chief of Defence Staff was made, and one of its most important tasks was to set up theatre commands to help the Army, Navy, and Air Force work together to fight the next war.

“The CDS has told the military to move forward with setting up theatre commands, which is his top priority. A lot has already been said about the problem, and now it’s time to move on.

They also said that the three services had done both separate and joint studies to look into the issue of theatre commands in more depth.

Gen. Bipin Rawat, who died before Gen. Chauhan, also put a lot of effort into making the three forces into leaner, more agile fighting units with modern weapons.

Before, there were plans to make western and eastern land-based commands as well as a maritime theatre command. Air Defence Command was also going to be made, and the area of Ladakh was going to be left out for now.

But the Indian Air Force, while supporting the idea of theatre commands, said that there shouldn’t be too many of them because that could mean that its assets, like fighter planes, would be split up.

It was also against any land or sea commands and wanted to set up theatres to deal with specific threats from different sides.

After Gen. Rawat died, these studies and presentations by the three forces kept going, and the top leaders of the defence ministry were given presentations on the subject.

Now that CDS Gen. Chauhan is in charge, the process of making these commands is likely to move faster, and decisions should be made soon.
