Point 5140 in Drass in Kargil has been renamed “Gun Hill” in honour of the Indian armed forces’ triumph and to honour the gunners’ supreme sacrifice during “Operation Vijay,” a defence official announced on Saturday.

He claimed that the key to the early conclusion of operations in the 1999 Kargil War was the Regiment of Artillery’s ability to have a significant impact on the enemy forces and their defences, notably Point 5140.

The Indian Army declared victory on July 26, 1999, following a nearly three-month-long fight with Pakistani forces on the ice heights of Kargil in Ladakh. This announcement marked the victorious conclusion of Operation Vijay.

According to the spokesman, Lieutenant General T K Chawla, Director General of Artillery, lay a wreath at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass on behalf of the Regiment of Artillery. Veteran gunners who had taken part in the operation were also there.

Veterans from every artillery regiment that earned the honour title KARGIL during Operation Vijay were present for the ceremony. He claimed that active members of the gunner fraternity were also present
