As Biden Visits The Middle East, Iran’s Navy Unveils Its First Naval Drone-Carrier Division

In a ceremony in southern Iran on Friday, the Iranian Navy unveiled its first naval drone-carrier division, a day after US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security and pledged that he will never allow Iran to acquire Nuclear weapons.

According to Xinhua, the naval drone belongs to the Iranian Navy’s southern flotilla, citing an Iranian official. According to the report, the division is made up of surface and subsurface vessels capable of carrying out various types of reconnaissance. It is also outfitted with combat and explosive unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).Notably, the development occurred despite accusations from the US and Israel that the Islamic Republic used drones and rockets to attack American forces and Israel-linked ships in the Gulf.

Meanwhile, state-run television reported that the latest naval drone is equipped with the most advanced weapons manufactured by Iran’s military and was flown over the Indian Ocean on Friday to demonstrate its capabilities. “The Iranian navy’s first drone-carrier division, consisting of ships and submarine units carrying all types of drone for combat, detection, and destruction, has been unveiled,” state television reported. “All types of the military’s and the defence ministry’s most advanced drones have flown over the Indian Ocean’s waters to demonstrate their capabilities,” it added.

Meanwhile, in response to the US-Israel Strategic Partnership Joint Declaration signed on the second day of Biden’s Middle East trip, as well as Biden’s pledge not to allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon even if it means using all of its national power, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said he will never back down from the rights of the country’s people in talks to resurrect a 2015 nuclear deal.

“Iran will continue the path of sustainable development and make honourable efforts to remove the sanctions with strength and logic,” Amir-Abdollahian noted.

What is the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)?

Notably, Iran has been sanctioned by the West for its illegal uranium activities. Several countries, including the United States, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates, have expressed concern about Iran developing nuclear weapons, a claim that Tehran has repeatedly refuted. Tehran, on the other hand, claims that its nuclear programme is for peaceful purposes such as generating electricity and medical isotopes. A deal was signed in 2015 that gave Tehran significant relief from sanctions. In exchange, Iran agreed not to develop nuclear weapons. After three years, then-US President Donald Trump unilaterally exited the nuclear deal, reimposing waves of harsh sanctions on the Islamic republic.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Tehran intends to increase uranium enrichment, a key component in the production of nuclear bombs, while claiming that its nuclear programme is for “peaceful purposes.”
