India successfully launched Agni-V ballistic Missile on Sunday. Agni-V is a nuclear-capable long-range ballistic missile. The strike range of the missile is of 5000 km. The missile was test fired from Dr Abdul Kakam Island off the Odisha coast.

It was a trial which had hit its target. Agni-V is a surface-to-surface missile which was test fired with the help of a mobile launcher from launch pad number 4 of the Integrated Test Range. Yesterday’s trial was the sixth trial of the state of the art Agni-V ballistic missile.

The missile has a range of more than 3100 miles i.e., 5000 km. The aim of launching this missile is potentially bringing targets in China within range.

Ravi Gupta, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesman said that India’s missile launch was flawless and the missile has achieved its target to reach its target.

He further said, “The ships located in mid-range and at the target point have tracked the missile and witnessed the final event.”

SP Das, Director of the Test Range said’ “It was a perfect launch. It met all the test parameters and hit its pre-determined target.” He further confirmed that the missile had flown more than 5000 km before reaching the target.

One of the officials of DRDO said that the performance of missile was fully monitored and tracked by various tracking instruments like radars and observation stations all through the mission. Among all other missiles launched by DRDO, like Nag, Prithvi and various other versions of Agni, Agni-V is the most advanced missile. It had been developed with new technologies in terms of navigation and guidance, engine and warhead.

Agni-V has been made by scientists in such a way that after travelling around 5000km, it will exactly reach its target point. It will turn towards earth due to the attraction of earth’s gravitational pull. The nuclear-capable long-range ballistic missile which has been developed with carbon composite heat shield which continues to burn by protecting them from the payload and keeping the temperature below 45-degree centigrade.

The first two missiles of Agni-V were tested in the year 2012 and 2013. Whereas the Agni-III, IV and V were launched with the help of a mobile launcher. Mobile launcher enables to launch at a very short period of time. Whereas, earlier open launcher needs long preparation for launching.

Among all the Agni series, Agni-V is the most powerful one. Agni-I has 700 km range, Agni-II has 2000 km range, Agni-III as well as Agni-IV has 2500-3000 km of range.
