Naseeruddin Shah: Birthday Special

Naseeruddin Shah is one of those actors in films who have achieved success on his own. He is an actor as well as a director.  He has worked in more than 100 films which include Bollywood as well as Hollywood and Pakistani films. Also, He is honored with Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.

Personal details

He was born on 20 July 1950 in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. He did his schooling at St. Anselm Ajmer and St. George’s College, Nainital. After that completed he graduated from Aligarh Muslim University.  Naseeruddin, who had a passion for acting since childhood, enrolled in the National School of Drama, Delhi.   His elder brother’s name is Jamiruddin Shah.  His brother was the first lieutenant general and is now the vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.

Actor Naseeruddin has shared many things related to his life in his autobiography ‘And then one day – A memoir’. He launched this biography in 2014.   According to him, his first wife Manara Sikri was Pakistani.  He was 19 when he married Manara Sikri and Manara was 34 years old. In this way, he married a girl 15 years older than him in 1969.  From this marriage, he had a daughter named Heeba Shah.  But after a few years of marriage, Manara moved to Iran.

Naseeruddin married Ratna Pathak on 1 April 1982. After marrying Ratna Pathak and Naseeruddin Shah had two children –Imad Shah, and Vivaan Shah. After Manara’s death, Heeba also started living with them.

Filmy career of Naseeruddin Shah

He started his film career with the Hindi film ‘Nishant’.  Naseeruddin was in the role of ‘Vishwam’ in this film directed by Shyam Benegal.  In this film, along with Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Amrish Puri, Shabana Azmi, Anant Nag was also in the lead role. The film won the 1977 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Naseeruddin was also highly appreciated for his performance in this.  The very next two years he acted in two films directed by Shyam Benegal –Manthan and Bhumika. Both the films received the National Film Award. 

His first film ‘Nishant’ was an art film. Apart from art films, he also worked in commercial films.  For example hero Hiralal, Gulami, Mohra, Karma, etc. Naseeruddin proved his mettle by acting in mainstream or commercial films. With this, he also showed that whatever the films are, they are no less than anyone in terms of acting.  In 1980, his film ‘Hum Paanch’ came which was a commercial film.  This film marked the beginning of Naseeruddin’s journey in mainstream cinema.  The audience was very happy with the comedy he did in this film.

Director Gulzar Saheb made a popular TV series on Mirza Ghalib in 1988. Naseeruddin Shah acted so well in it that after that he became famous as Mirza Ghalib Naseeruddin Shah. In the same year, he acted in a film ‘malamaal’ 1988, in which he was in a lead role. That film was well-liked by the audience.

Apart from Bollywood, Naseeruddin has also worked in Hollywood films.  In 2003 his Hollywood film ‘The League of Extra Ordinary Gentlemen’ has come. Naseeruddin played the role of Captain Nemo in this film. 

He also acted in the Pakistani film ‘Khuda Ke Liye’ in 2007.  It was a drama film composed by Shoaib Mansoor.  The film was released in Pakistan on 20 July 2007 and in India on 4 April 2008. At that time hardly any Bollywood hero wanted to do a Pakistani film but Nasruddin Shah never understood whether the film is Pakistani or Indian.  Once he said,” I am lucky and also, the fact that I love my work. I love acting! There is something about performing. I can’t explain the excitement and I haven’t got over it. I think I am obsessed with acting.” His words show that he is very fond of his work.  He also acted in another Pakistani film ‘Zinda Bhag’ which came out in 2013.

Recently Nasruddin Shah was admitted to the hospital due to pneumonia. At present, he has come home after recovering.  Even after 70 years, he has not retired from the acting world.
