Bengaluru was the first city in southern India to have Metro rail connectivity. Also known as Namma Metro, the Bengaluru Metro now covers most of the city and is soon going to be extended to the peripheral areas of the IT city, to facilitate connectivity for the population. When the Bengaluru Metro was inaugurated, it became the first underground metro system in south India. It comprises of underground, at grade, and elevated metro stations. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is responsible for building, operating, and expanding the metro network in Bengaluru. It is a joint venture of the Government of India and the Karnataka government.

On March 25, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Whitefield (Kadugodi)- KR Puram Metro line. Metro operations on the route began on March 26, 2023.

The 13.72-km stretch is the first tech corridor in Bangalore to be connected by Metro. It is expected to cut down travel time by 40% and benefit nearly 6 lakh people working in IT parks, Export Promotion Industrial areas, malls and hospitals. Further, it will promote the development of the software industry and reduce road congestion. The new section has been developed under Namma Metro phase 2 project, as part of the purple line connecting Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield. The Baiyappanahalli Metro Station is situated on the Purple Line of Namma Metro. The BMRCL plans to make the Purple Metro Line fully operational by August 2023. The agency is working to complete the two missing stretches to provide connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the city.

The two-km metro line from Kengeri to Challaghatta Mysuru Road trial run by the BMRCL started on July 29, 2023. The metro line is a part of the purple line on Mysuru Road. BMRCL has also tested the line between Byappanahalli and KR Pura.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd., managing director Anjum Parwez said that The Bengaluru Metro rail project is on track and will complete 175 km of connectivity in the city by June 2025. Under the metro project’s second and third phases, Bangalore will have 314 km of Metro connectivity by 2041.

Recently, the Karnataka government gave in-principal approval for the Bangalore Metro project phase 3. The upcoming Bangalore metro line covering 32.16 km is expected to be completed at a total cost of Rs 16,368 crore. The project will receive funding from the centre besides loans raised by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has announced that Bangalore Metro operations to the Kempegowda International Airport will begin by the end of 2023. The 39-km long corridor starting at Krishnarajapura (KR Puram) will be developed under the Metro Phase 2B project. The route will be aligned along the northern part of Outer Ring Road (ORR) via Nagawara, Hebbal and Jakkur before connecting with the airport.

The Karnataka CM has said that a total of 27 km of new lines will be added by 2024. This will expand Bangalore’s metro network from 70 km to 176 km. The CM presented the state budget on July 7, 2023, with an outlay of over Rs 3.27 lakh crore for financial year 2023-24. A budget of Rs 30,000 was allocated for Bangalore’s Namma Metro projects. The amount allocated exceeds last year’s fund which stood at Rs 2,014 crore.

According to an action plan prepared by the Karnataka department of planning, program monitoring and statistics and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FICCI), the Karnataka government plans to introduce four new Metro corridors by 2032 to provide better connectivity to Bangalore residents, under Phase 3 of the Bangalore Metro Rail project. The proposed new metro lines are expected to provide Metro access to every citizen within 1-2 km from their workplaces or home.

Developed at the cost of Rs 27,000 crore, the proposed Metro corridors include two new Metro routes and two extensions:

• Old Airport Road, from MG Road to Hope Farm via Marathahalli and Whitefield/ IT corridor (underground), covering 16 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 9,600 crore
• Nagawara to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) via Thanisandra/ Bharatiya City, covering 25 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore
• A 6-km Metro extension from Whitefield to Katamanallur / Hoskote, at an estimated cost of Rs 2,400 crore
• A 12-km extension of Bannerghatta line to Jigani at an estimated cost of Rs 4,800 crore.

Namma Metro Construction

The Bengaluru Metro was designed and conceptualised by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The first line was opened to the public in October 2011, after years of delay. The project, currently in expansionary mode, is being executed by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). The average daily ridership on the Namma Metro network is 5,18,000 as per data last updated in January 2020.

Namma Metro Phase 1

Bangalore’s Namma Metro Phase 1 included two lines of length of 42 kms, of which about 8.82 kms is underground and the remaining is elevated. There are 40 stations in this phase. The foundation stone for construction of Phase 1 was laid in June 2006 and the construction began between Baiyyappanahalli and Mahatma Gandhi Road in April 2007. The phase was later expanded to include the northern extension (from Yeshwanthpur to Nagasandra) and southern extension (from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road to Yelachenahalli).

Cost

The final cost for developing Namma Metro Phase 1 was estimated to be Rs 14,405 crore while the land acquisition is around Rs 2,500 crore.

Namma Metro Phase 2

Approved in January 2014 by the union cabinet, the estimated cost for the second phase of Namma Metro was Rs 26,405 crores, which is estimated to escalate to Rs 32,000 crores in due time. Phase 2 spans a length of 72 kms, out of which 13 kms is underground. This phase has 62 stations out of which 12 are underground. Bengaluru Metro Phase 2 includes extension of the two Phase 1 lines in both directions, as well as construction of two new lines.

As per the plan, the south-end of the Green Line will be extended from Yelachenahalli to Anjanapura along Kanakapura Road and from Nagasandra to Madavara (previously named BIEC) on Tumkur Road. On the Purple line, the east-end has been extended from Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield and from Mysore Road to Challaghatta via Kengeri.

The K.R. Puram to Whitefield Metro route has been developed by the BMRCL at a cost of over Rs 4,500 crores. It will comprise 12 stations.

RV Road to Bommasandra

A new, 18-km-long, fully-elevated line from RV Road in south Bangalore to Bommasandra in the southeast via Electronic City is also planned in the second phase.

The metro line is expected to be operational by December 2023. This section of the Bangalore Metro’s Yellow Line, starting from the RV Road station on the Green Line, will intersect with the upcoming Gottigere-Nagawara Pink Line route at Jayadeva Hospital and with the Blue line at Central Silk Board Station. The section will proceed to Bommasandra.

Kalena Agrahara (Gottigere) to Nagawara

Another 21-km-line from Kalena Agrahara (previously Gottigere) to Nagawara is also under process. The route will have an elevated corridor, covering a distance of 7.5 kms with six stations and an underground stretch of 13.76 kms from south ramp near Jayanagar Fire station to north ramp at Nagawara consisting of 12 underground stations.

Chief minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, has asked officials to complete the second phase of Bengaluru Metro by 2024.

Namma Metro Phase 2A (Blue Line)

A new line between Silk Board and KR Puram has been included in Phase 2 as Phase-2A of the project. This line would run along the Outer Ring Road and is proposed to have 13 stations – Silk Board, HSR Layout, Agara, Ibbalur, Bellandur, Kadubeesanahalli, Kodibisanahalli, Marathahalli, ISRO, Doddanekundi, DRDO Sports Complex, Sarasvathi Nagara (previously Mahadevapura) and KR Puram.

Also called the ORR Metro Line or Blue Line, this will have interchange stations with the extended Purple Line at KR Puram and with the proposed RV Road – Bommasandra line (Yellow Line) at Silk Board.

Namma Metro Phase 2B (Airport Line)

To connect Kempegowda International Airport with MG Road, Namma Metro Phase 2B is under-construction, which will be built at a cost of Rs 10,584 crores. The route will be 39 kms long. The route would begin at Krishnarajapura (KR Puram) and will be aligned along the northern part of ORR (Outer Ring Road), via Nagawara, Hebbal and Jakkur, before heading towards the airport.

Cost

The total cost of Phase 2 is estimated around Rs 26,405 crore. Land acquisition is expected to cost around Rs 5,000 crore. The state and central governments will contribute 30% and 20% of the total project cost, respectively. The remaining will be obtained through senior term loans.

According to media reports, state-owned Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (REC Limited) will provide financial assistance of Rs 3,405 crore to BMRCL for developing the Phase 2 project in the city.

Namma Metro Purple Line

The Purple Line connects Baiyyappanahalli in the east with Mysore Road terminal station in the south-west. The line is 18.1 kms long and has 17 stations. Mostly elevated, it has a 4.8-km underground section in the middle and passes through some of the prime areas of Bengaluru including MG Road, Majestic, Railway Station, Vidhana Soudha, etc. Purple line is currently being extended to Challaghatta in the south-west while it has been to Whitefield in the east.

The stretch from Mysuru Road to Kengeri became operational on August 30, 2021. The BMRCL spent Rs 1,820 crores for developing the elevated line and Rs 181 crores for land acquisition. The city will get its first elevated metro depot at Challaghatta.

Upon completion, the Purple Metro Line will be a 43.5-km route connecting Challaghatta with Whitefield (Kadugodi), providing smooth connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the city. The two stretches that will be linked are KR Pura to Baiyyappanahalli and Kengeri to Challaghatta.

The stretch from Challaghatta and Kadugodi (Whitefield) by August. Once the section becomes operational, BMRCL expects an additional 80,000 to 90,000 people to use the Namma Metro. Further, this will extend the purple line of the Namma Metro network to 42.53 km. It will provide easy metro connectivity to residents in the eastern and western parts of the city.

Namma Metro Yellow Line

The Bangalore metro’s yellow line route will connect RV Road to Bommasandra along an elevated route, covering a distance of 19.14 kms. It will comprise a total of 16 metro stations.

Furthermore, the BMRCL plans to open the Yellow Line, which connects RV Road to Bommasandra, in one go by December 2023. Earlier, the BMRCL had decided to open the Yellow Line in two phases – Bommasandra to the Central Silk Board in June 2023, under the first phase and the Central Silk Board to RV Road in December 2023, under the second phase. However, the BMRCL took the decision to complete the project in one go considering the fact that opening only one section of this route would not draw much ridership.

Most of the works of tracks and stations have been completed and final works are in progress.

Namma Metro Pink Line

The pink line is among the future metro projects in Bangalore that will boost the connectivity in the city. This section will span a distance of about 21 kms and connect Kalena Agaraha (formerly Gottigere) to Nagawara. There will be an elevated route of 7.5 kms and an underground stretch of 13.8 kms. There are a total number of 18 metro stations planned in this metro line.

According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has completed about 75% of the underground tunnelling work for the Pink Line. Tunnelling work for 15.2 km of the 21.2 km has been completed. The BMRCL plans to commission the entire Pink Line by the end of March 2025.

Once operational, the Pink Line metro route will connect key areas of the city and is expected to boost economic prospects in the region.

Namma Metro Green Line

The Bangalore Metro Green Line connects Nagasandra in the north-west to Anjanapura in the south-west. It covers a distance of 30 kms and has 30 stations. Like the Purple Line, this is also mostly elevated on both, the north and south sides and has a four-km underground section in the middle. The line has 26 elevated metro stations and three underground stations. Bengaluru Metro Green Line passes through industrial areas such as Peenya, Yeshwanthpur in the north and connects it with the residential areas such as Basavanagudi, Jayanagar, Banashankari, etc. The Green Line is also being expanded till Madavara in the north-west and Silk Institute in the south. With this, the length of the line will increase to 33.5 kms.

The Nagasandra-Madavara section is set to be inaugurated in August 2023. The 3-km section was earlier scheduled for opening in 2017. However, the project was delayed due to land acquisition issues and other challenges. Once operational, this metro line will provide connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the city. The Green Line will be the first line in the city to connect with the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC).

Namma Metro Phase 3

Bangalore Metro’s Phase 3 alignment has been finalised. The Bangalore metro line will cover 105 kms, connecting other Metro lines, suburban rail and bus depots at nine points, also facilitating multi-modal integration. The project will be ready by 2027 – 2028.

Corridor 1 was earlier planned to terminate at Hebbal Railway Station. The Metro Phase 3 is also set to be extended by about 2 kms and connect up to Kempapura.

The construction of Namma Metro Phase 3 is likely to commence in 2025 and end by 2035. The metro corridors under Phase 3 project will cover a length of 80 km.

Under Phase 3, there will be two corridors:

1. Corridor 1 will span a distance of 31 km and run along the Outer Ring Road (ORR West), linking J P Nagar to Kempapura. It will have 22 stations intersect Phase 2B of Airport line
2. Corridor 2 will cover 11 kms, and connect Hosahalli Toll to Kadabagere

As per the proposed new metro route map details, the metro routes in Bangalore include:

• Carmelaram to Yelahanka, covering 37 kms
• Marathahalli to Hosakerehalli, covering 21 kms
• Bommasandra to Attibele
• Gottigere to Basavanapura
• RK Hegde Nagar to Aerospace Park
• Kogilu Cross – Rajanukunte
• Iblur to Carmelaram

In 2020, the government announced that two corridors will be developed as metrolite lines, under public private partnership (PPP) model. These include ORR West Line of 30 kms: Hebbal to Mysore Road Metro Station and Magadi Road Toll Gate to Kadabagere section covering 14 kms.

In December 2019, the BMRCL introduced a Comprehensive Mobility Plan for subsequent phases. This includes the following routes under Phase 3:

• Magadi Road Toll gate to Kadabgere (Metrolite) (12.5 km)
• Hebbal to Sarjapura (35 km)

Hosahalli Metro Station (on Magadi road from Toll gate) to Kadabagere will be an elevated with nine metro stations. It is expected to be completed in 2028.

Cost

The estimated cost of the two corridors (J P Nagar to Kempapura and Hosahalli-Kadabagere) project is nearly Rs 13,500 crore. A new corridor of 35 km from Hebbal to Sarjapura will taken up under Phase-3B, estimated to cost around Rs 15,000 crores.

Considering that stopping train services by 8 pm is causing inconvenience for the citizens, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has decided to extend the metro timings till 10 pm. If implemented, Metro trains will operate from 6 am to 10 pm.

Bengaluru Metro operations

Services

Bengaluru Metro services start from 5 am and operate till 11 pm everyday running with an interval of four to 20 minutes. The trains initially functioned with three coaches. However, as the ridership began to grow, they were converted to six coaches. Power is supplied by a 750-volt direct current through third rail.

Ridership

In September 2021, the average daily ridership of Namma metro rose to 3 lakh passengers, the highest ever after resumed after the lockdown due the second wave of the pandemic.

Currently, the Whitefield-K R Puram section has an average daily ridership of around 28,000 passengers. By connecting the missing link connecting the 25.7-km Kengeri-Byappanahalli corridor to the Whitefield-K R Puram section, BMRCL expects an increase in daily ridership from 75,000 to one lakh. This is after accounting for the ridership of Kengeri to Whitefield, and Majestic to Whitefield. Once the missing link is connected, the journey on the Kengeri-Whitefield route will take around 60-70 minutes.

Metro speed

The Metro system is designed for trains to run at a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph).

Metro fare

Namma Metro has an Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system, which uses contactless smart tokens and smart card. Varshik is a type of smart card currently available. It costs Rs 50 with a user deposit of Rs 50 and validity of one year. It provides a discount of 5% on fares.

Security

The Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KISF) is the agency that is responsible for providing security on Bangalore Metro network.

Bangalore Metro Mobile app

In 2013, the Namma Metro mobile app, developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), was launched by the BMRCL for Android users. It was officially re-launched on November 4, 2016, with additional features. The application enables users to buy and recharge their smart cards online, find nearby metro stations and get information about metro fares, route map, train frequencies, and parking.

Rules

According to the Bangalore Metro Rail (Carriage and Ticket) Rules 2011, the maximum weight of personal baggage allowed is 15 kilogram (kg). According to the rules, those travelling by metro cannot carry any goods other than small baggage containing personal belongings not exceeding 60cm x 45cm x 25cm in size and 15 kg in weight, except with the prior approval of the metro railway administration. Further, the rules prohibit carrying explosive, inflammable, and poisonous substances. According to the Metro Railway (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002, offences committed on the metro may result in fines and, in some cases, jail sentences.

BMRCL proposes three new metro lines, spanning around 77 km

June 8, 2023: BMRCL managing director Anjum Parwez has proposed three new Metro lines running to around 77 km in the city and its outskirts, in a review meeting with Bengaluru Development Minister D K Shivakumar.

According to the proposal, a 17-km metro line from Whitefield to Hoskote via Katamanallur gate, an inner ring road for 35 km which would run as a circle inside the Outer Ring Road, and a 25-km line from Old Airport Road via Marthahalli underpass to Varthur and then Kadugodi.

According to Shivakumar, the Byappanahalli-KR Puram Metro section will be ready by July 2023, while the Kengeri-Challaghatta section is expected to be ready by August-September 2023, and the Nagasandra-Madavara (BIEC) section by September-October 2023. The new route from Bommasandra to RV Road is likely to be completed by October-November 2023.

Bangalore Metro waiting time to reduce to 3-3.5 mins

The waiting time for commuters travelling on the Purple Line and Green Line and their extension lines will soon come down to 3-3.5 minutes as BMRCL receives the 36 new train sets in phases, according to media reports. Currently, trains run at a 4.5-minute frequency during peak hours in the morning and evening on the Purple Line and its extension (Baiyappanahalli and Kengeri) and a five-minute frequency on the Green Line and its extension (Nagasandra and Silk Institute).

KR Puram metro station to get foot over-bridge

After the long-standing disagreement between SWR and BMRCL on land acquisition conditions, the construction foot over-bridge (FOB) between KR Puram railway station and Metro station is finally underway. The South Western Railway (SWR) has finally agreed to give an area of 3,600 sqm to BMRCL near the railway station’s platform No. 4.

The FOB will be developed in three phases – connecting the Purple Line station with the other side of the road, connecting the Blue Line station with the other side of the road, and connecting the renovated KR Puram railway station’s platform to all the Namma metro stations.

Namma Metro to launch One Nation-One Card, QR code ticketing

Commuters will soon be using National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) as well as QR-code based ticketing. The BMRCL has set up one or two Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates at every station of the Phase 1 Metro. The new AFC gate are enabled to accept QR-code and open loop NCMC. The Phase 2 Metro stations are already equipped with NCMC and QR-code compliant AFC gates. The QR-code based ticketing will allow passengers to buy tickets through a mobile app and get paper-tickets at ticket counters. Once operational, the new system will eliminate the need to carry smart cards or tokens. Open loop cards, which are universal, can be used to shop and pay for parking. It is integrated with other transport modes like BMTC, autos and taxis.

BMRCL signs loan agreement with Asian Development Bank

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) recently signed a loan agreement for Rs 3,643 crores with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), for the completion of two important routes along the Outer Ring Road and Airport Metro Corridor. The BMRCL said that with this deal, financial arrangements have been made for Phase 2A and Phase 2B of the metro project.

Earlier, the BMRCL had signed another loan agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for Rs 2,317 crores for the same project on March 26, 2021. The central and the state governments will contribute Rs 3,973 crores through equity and subordinate debt. The Karnataka government will also spend Rs 2,762 crores on land acquisition.
