The Fixer (1998)

Was impressed by the first transition with the horse, when you see Jon Voight's face from the front, and then a Stunt Double jumping an obstacle from the back. Was disappointed with the next - when you see the stunt double from the side - and it's clearly a double. And again...

The intro was oddly long and subpar, but when it really gets started... it stays that way. Somewhat.

The DMC presentation reminded me of RoboCop.

I wonder if this is how the higher-up's really do their deals? They don't really capture the glamor and game here. It seems more so badly scripted. Yet the horse show is there for a reason, as we soon get to see...

I start off skeptical, but it soon gets dark. It's the story of a bad guy amongst bad guys - uncrowned kings of the city, who has a change of heart after he's momentarily incapacitated entirely. Unable to do anything but blink. And he starts to question... everything.

I'm not usually a fan of movies where nobody wins, neither good nor bad guys, but I did like this one. Simple or not. Well-descript or not. It veils a hard truth of the world in a compelling story, and the swaying shot as they descend to the pits of fire right before the priest's killed... that was masterful.

I wonder how Voight managed to get the roles he did though. He may have charisma, but surely not that much? He's not the best actor is he? He's old too, no?

I'm a little perplexed when I see him as a leading role in movies like this, that seem like they could've called for someone more suave and suitable. But maybe all the movies I've seen him in are on the steps of a long, successful, and all the more attributing career. And so his persona was the more popular choice. Or maybe he really does have some connects...

But yeah. He ain't bad anyway. He plays his part.

Bad guys. Cold world. Good movie. After all.
