Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)

This one aged... maybe a little worse than the other Star Wars movies, though the holographic circus and concert acts were cool.

There's a lot of focus on Chewbacca and family, though the main actors are barely there. Just quick cameos. And too much comedy - various bits and pieces meant to seem futuristic that somehow come across all the more old-fashioned now. How fast impressions change no?

Princess Leia sings though! It ends nicely. And the animated bits were nice.

If you liked old Star Wars you'll probably enjoy this too. It's like a time capsule of culture. Of the times, and the lore, and more.

If you haven't seen or care for the movies though... I wonder.

It feels like a special that'd appeal way more to fans than the casual viewer, you probably need some prerequisite experience of the Star Wars realm to know or enjoy the characters; appreciate the ways this differs from the movies, all the while staying true to the brand.

It's a different take on the Star Wars series for sure. Like a play more so than a movie. Theatrical. With enclosed locations - like stages.

It's special. A. For the fans.

rated 3.5/5: not bad at all
