Batman Forever (1995)

It's starting to be almost like the Bond series here, with how a new woman appears for each Movie - though Batman's problems with revealing his identity repeat themselves in one after the other. This time though, maybe it's a romance that will last? The Catwoman, though stylefully resurfaced on the roofs of Gothham at the end of the previous movie, is gone. Instead Tommy Lee Jones appears as Harvey Twoface, and Jim Carrey as The Riddler. I wasn't sure about Carrey at first, he seemed a bit too similar to his regular alter-ego in pretty much any one of his other movies from this time, but as soon as he puts on that mask he really is that character.

It's just just two new villains and a woman this time, but also a sidekick - Robin. I'm not sure what the title plays at (Robin's potential to take over whenever Batman falters, or his sudden decisiveness surrounding his future, and if he really wants to be Batman?), but it's a worthy end to the Trilogy... even if it's not really a trilogy. Robin's a funky addition, and the world - though still plenty sinister and dark, seems to have taken a turn for the more colorful and contrasting even after his great sacrifice. The criminals are as crazy as always, and they go a step further than usual in this one by actually de-facing Batman, and putting to life a plan to (kind of) enslave all of Gothham City... that actually has the potential to work.

Once again the special effects have really gotten an upgrade, and the gadgetry and explosives are all upped a notch from the previous. Of these three, the second will probably always be a favorite as far as atmosphere and character charisma goes, but the backstory of Batman woven into the plot with this one does make it feel a bit more intimate than the former. The mythical Batman unveiled... as little as that concept seems to suit a figure of such supposed myth and discipline, it works

Seems the series is evolving with each sequel, and the variation level is still high. The added color had me remembering Dick Tracy (and maybe because Robin's name is Dick, too), another classic I feel an urge to re-watch soon, but before that, there's one more segment of these old movies to see! One that made it, and a few more that unfortunately didn't, but it did pick up quite nicely with the Nolan trilogy after that. I'll need to re-watch those too, especially The Dark Knight. This was: another good watch.
