Il termine “car kit” ha alcune connotazioni negative che evocano visioni di una Pontiac Fiero che fa del suo meglio per sembrare un’auto sportiva italiana. Ma c’è stato un tempo in cui le collezioni erano un po’ meglio di così, e sono diventate abbastanza vecchie da essere storicamente interessanti.

Questo centurione in fibra ottica è un ottimo esempio della razza, e non solo ha un bell’aspetto, e non solo è in condizioni eccellenti, ma ha anche un retroscena oscuro con intrighi, tradimenti e morte. Ma prima, le basi.

Il Centurion è stato creato da Fiberfab, un’azienda multi-auto con sede in California che ha realizzato carrozzerie per una gamma di veicoli, come Ford Mustang, Jaguar E-Type, Jeep Willys e, naturalmente, Chevrolet Corvette.

Questo modello è fortemente ispirato alla Chevrolet XP-87, un prototipo sperimentale che definirà gran parte del design della Corvette C2. Costruito nel 1959, il concetto è stato coniato da Bill Mitchell, Pete Brock e Larry Shinoda. La sua leggenda si consolidò in pista, tuttavia, quando vinse il campionato SCCA nel 1960, con Dick Thompson al volante.

Il design ha attirato l’attenzione di Warren “Bud” Goodwin, fondatore di Fiberfab, che alla fine ha messo in produzione il Centurion. L’idea aveva senso. Come l’XP-87, il Centurion è stato progettato per adattarsi al telaio della Corvette C1 e la carrozzeria è stata realizzata in fibra di vetro.

Il layout era così simile, secondo la leggenda, che Chevrolet stava progettando di inviare un ordine di cessazione e desistenza a Fiberfab. Tuttavia, la società non ha avuto alcuna possibilità perché Goodwin stava per incorrere in alcuni problemi personali.

Fu più o meno in questo periodo che un giorno Goodwin sarebbe entrato a casa sua per trovare sua moglie, Jamaica, a letto con uno dei suoi meccanici. Le circostanze esatte sono oscure, ma Godwin ha sparato e ucciso sua moglie, in quello che sarebbe stato accusato di omicidio di primo grado più tardi in tribunale.

L’auto completamente restaurata è alimentata da un motore V8 da 4,6 litri da 283 CV (211 kW / 287 CV). In perfette condizioni, la casa d’aste stima che sarà venduta tra € 120.000 e € 160.000 ($ 131.367 – $ 175.156 ai tassi di cambio attuali) quando raggiungerà il blocco il 30 giugno alla Le Mans Classic Sale 2023.

At around this time, Goodwin allegedly walked into his home one day to find his wife, Jamaica, in bed with one of his mechanics. The exact circumstances are murky, but Goodwin shot and killed his wife, in what would come to be ruled voluntary manslaughter later in court."

According to Silodrome, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, but would never see freedom again, dying of a massive heart attack a few months later. Although the company lives on to this day, that was the end of the line for the short-lived Centurion."

The number of bodies that Fiberfab managed to make is not known, but is likely less than 12. This one may also be the only one in Europe, having been purchased at a Barrett-Jackson auction in 2018, and exported to Andorra, per Artcurial, which is handling the auction of this model.
