Tell us a little bit about your trip

I was recently invited by the team at SeaLink to explore South Australia for three nights, visiting both Adelaide and Kangaroo Island. The first night of my trip was spent at Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets, a lovely modern hotel with a quirky fit-out and incredible facilities.

It was an early start the next morning, as I took a SeaLink coach connection service from Adelaide to Cape Jervis. From here, I caught a ferry to Penneshaw, the second-biggest town on Kangaroo Island, where I joined SeaLink’s Sip & See Day Tour. This tour is a great way to explore Kangaroo Island’s thriving food and wine scene. Throughout the tour, I had a wonderful two-course lunch at the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, visited Clifford’s Honey Farm to sample delicious Drunken Drone Brewery’s Honey Wheat Ale, and enjoyed a wine tasting at False Cape Wines Cellar Door.

For my second day on Kangaroo Island, I hired a rental car to explore the island independently. First, I headed to Seal Bay, which offered an amazing opportunity to watch seals in their natural habitat. Next, I drove to Flinders Chase National Park, where I saw some truly spectacular scenery, like the Admirals Arch, a natural, oceanfront rock arch. The Remarkable Rocks is another must-see in the national park, a geological phenomenon that is very aptly named.

How easy was it to get to Kangaroo Island?

I found getting to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide a very seamless experience. SeaLink offers coach connection services from Adelaide Bus Station and select hotels in the CBD to Cape Jervis, which is around a 90-minute drive. You could also opt to hire a car in Adelaide and make the drive yourself. From Cape Jervis, it’s just a 45-minute ferry to Kangaroo Island.

What was the accommodation like?

While on Kangaroo Island I stayed in Penneshaw, which is considered the best base from which to explore the island, as it’s home to the largest selection of accommodation and dining options. I spent two nights at Kangaroo Island Seafront Hotel, which certainly lived up to its name. Just minutes from both the ferry terminal and the local pub, it offered a great coastal location and provided a comfortable stay. Plus, the coffee at the attached restaurant was delicious!

The Kangaroo Island Seafront Hotel is a beachfront accommodation located in the town of Penneshaw on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. With its stunning ocean views, spacious rooms, and convenient location, it offers a comfortable stay for travelers visiting the island.

How easy was it to get around Kangaroo Island?

I found it much easier to get around Kangaroo Island than expected. The most popular way to get around the island is to hire a car, which you can do on the island or back in Adelaide. Having a car allowed me to explore Kangaroo Island at my own pace, which makes it a great option for travellers who don’t want to stick to a strict schedule. Keep in mind that if you do hire a car, you will need a map, as the island has limited wifi connection. I used a map that I picked up on the SeaLink ferry. However, Kangaroo Island doesn’t have many roads, so it’s hard to get lost even if you don’t have a map!

If you’d rather not drive, joining a guided tour is another great way to get around the island. I did the SeaLink Sip & See Tour; however, they have a number of tours to choose from. The great thing about exploring on a tour is that you are led by a local guide, who is always happy to share their insider knowledge of the island!

Join SeaLink’s Sip & See Day Tour which provides a great way to explore Kangaroo Island’s thriving food and wine scene. Have lunch at the Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, visit Clifford’s Honey Farm to sample delicious Drunken Drone Brewery’s Honey Wheat Ale, and enjoy a wine tasting at False Cape Wines Cellar Door.

What surprised you most about the destination?

Kangaroo Island is much larger and more remote than I initially expected – it’s only inhabited by just under 5000 people! Because of this remoteness, I struggled to find phone reception, which was another surprise.

Who would you recommend a South Australia holiday to?

One of the great things about South Australia is that it offers a vast range of attractions, so every traveller will find something that interests them. I would recommend Kangaroo Island in particular to anyone who wants to witness some of Australia’s most breathtaking landscapes and encounter wildlife up close.

Encounter wildlife up close at Kangaroo Island as it is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, penguins, sea lions, and a variety of bird species, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Any tips for those considering a trip to Kangaroo Island?

If you’re planning a holiday to Kangaroo Island, keep in mind that it does take a while to drive to the island’s various attractions, so you will spend most of your days in a car or coach. It is also very difficult to access wifi outside of your hotel, so if you’re travelling independently, be sure to carry a physical map or download a map on Google to use offline so you don’t get lost!

What will you do on your next South Australia holiday?

I would love to explore some of South Australia’s other destinations, including the Barossa Valley or Flinders Ranges. If I ever get the chance to head back to Kangaroo Island, I definitely want to check out Emu Bay Lavender Farm, which I didn’t get a chance to do this time around.

Kangaroo Island boasts a diverse range of landscapes, from rugged coastlines to lush forests and wildlife-filled national parks to pristine beaches such as Emu Bay.
