Nat’s Blog: Top 5 Things to do in Sydney

If you’re looking for the ultimate Australian city break, you’ll be hard-pressed to find somewhere more exciting than Sydney. Home to golden sand beaches, iconic Australian landmarks, and a lively dining scene, Sydney is the perfect destination for both short city breaks and as part of an extended New South Wales holiday. If you’re looking for inspiration for your next visit, here are five of my favourite things to do in Sydney.

Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge

No visit to Sydney is complete without visiting one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Affectionately nicknamed the Coathanger by locals, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is the largest steel arch bridge on the planet. Standing proud above the glistening Sydney Harbour, this iconic bridge is an intrinsic part of the city.

While you can walk, drive or cycle across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the best way to experience this cultural landmark is, of course, to climb it. Dare to scale the Sydney Harbour Bridge on BridgeClimb’s original climb experience and be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over Sydney. Hear stories about the history of Sydney as you climb the upper arch of the bridge and feel on top of the world when you finally reach the peak! This Sydney Harbour Bridge experience should be on everyone’s bucket-list.

Wine and Dine at the Sydney Opera House

If you love some good food and wine, accompanied by even better entertainment, you can’t miss a night at the Sydney Opera House. Easily the most iconic building in Australia, the Sydney Opera House is an architectural masterpiece and vibrant performance space. Snap a selfie on the famous front steps, tour the dazzling interior and catch a showstopping performance – there’s always plenty going on at the Opera House.

At Sydney Opera House, the entertainment jumps from the stage and onto the plate. For a boozy brunch or decadent night out, Opera Bar is the place to be. Situated right by the water’s edge, Opera Bar has Sydney’s finest foods and drinks, plus the best views in town. I love that Opera Bar is a big believer in supporting local businesses – in fact, their still wine list is 100% Aussie! Whether you’re visiting for a cheeky cocktail or a pre-show dinner date, Opera Bar is the perfect venue for any occasion.

Get Cultured at Sydney’s Museums

Culture vultures are sure to find a home in Sydney’s endless museums and galleries. Whether you’re interested in art, history, science or technology, this historic city has a museum for everyone to enjoy.

Housing a collection of over 380,000 items across science, design, technology, history, the arts and engineering, the Powerhouse Museum is definitely a must-visit. Be sure to check out the Zero Gravity Space Lab during your visit, where you can experience what it’s like to be weightless while living and working in space.

Another fantastic Sydney museum to add to your list is the Australian Museum. Founded in 1827, this is the oldest museum in Australia and houses more than 20 million pieces. Here, you can explore the world’s incredible biodiversity at the Wild Planet exhibition, learn about the captivating cultures of the Pacific, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and glimpse into the future with the interactive Climate Change display. You’re sure to learn a thing or two while museum-hopping across Sydney.

Hit Up Sydney’s Iconic Beaches

Sydney is world-renowned for its picturesque beaches – from secret coves to busy surf beaches, there are more than 100 beaches to choose from. Of course, the most famous is Bondi Beach, where you can spend an unforgettable day learning to surf, sunbathing on the golden shores or enjoying lunch at Bondi Icebergs, where you can snap a shot of the postcard-perfect swimming pool. Another Sydney must-do is the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk, a six-kilometre walk that takes you past beautiful beaches, clifftop views and decadent local cafes.

If you’re looking for a beach that’s a little more off the beaten path, grab the family and head to Wattamolla Beach. Located within the Royal National Park in south Sydney, the calm waters of this hidden cove are perfect for snorkelling and swimming. Put together a picnic and make a day of your visit to this picture-perfect beach.
