Natalie’s Top 5: Top 5 South Australia Holiday Destinations

For a holiday filled with spectacular scenery, breathtaking wildlife encounters, cultural experiences and decadent wine discoveries, I’ll always choose South Australia. No matter what kind of holiday you’re looking for, South Australia has something for everyone. Choose to soak in the culture of Adelaide, swim with dolphins and sea lions on Kangaroo Island, glide leisurely down the mighty Murray River or sample world-class food and wine in the Barossa Valley. Here are five of my favourite South Australia Holiday destinations – I hope you find some inspiration for your next visit to the Festival State!

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is one of the best holiday destinations in South Australia – it’s impossible not to relax when you step onto this pristine paradise! With a rugged coastline, impeccably clear waters and incredible wildlife encounters, it’s no wonder Kangaroo Island is known as nature’s playground.

This is by far one of the best places in Australia to see wild native animals. I absolutely love Seal Bay, where you can get up close and personal with the resident sea lions in their natural habitat – be sure to have your camera at the ready! You can also swim with wild bottlenose dolphins in the waters of Kangaroo Island, which is an incredible experience you’ll never forget.

Barossa

South Australia’s incredible wine regions should be on everyone’s bucket list. While there are so many to choose from, the Barossa Valley has to be my favourite. There are over 80 wineries in the Barossa Valley alone, and since they all offer incredible drinking and dining experiences, your biggest struggle will be deciding where to go!

If you can only make it to one winery during your Barossa Valley stay, I highly suggest Seppeltsfield Estate. Founded in 1851, this is arguably the Barossa Valley’s most iconic winery and produces more award-winning wines than I can count! When you’ve worked up an appetite, the Seppeltsfield Estate is also home to some incredible gourmet restaurants.

Believe it or not, there are other things to do in the Barossa Valley than just drinking wine. See the region from a different angle with a hot air balloon adventure. I promise the early wake up is worth it for the panoramic views as you glide over the vineyards and rolling hills of the Barossa ranges! I also recommend checking out the Barossa Farmer’s Market, where you can sample local produce and gourmet food offerings.

Flinders Ranges

Another South Australia holiday destination well-worth discovering is the Flinders Ranges, especially if you love adventure. Boasting some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in Australia, the Flinders Ranges is rich in Indigenous history and home to a vast array of wildlife.

The Flinders Ranges has to be one of the best places in South Australia to connect with the local Indigenous population. I highly recommend embarking on an Aboriginal Cultural Tour, where you’ll uncover the rich history of ancient and contemporary Aboriginal culture and learn more about native animals, bush tucker and the diversity of the Flinders Ranges.

However, the best way to take in the magnitude of the Flinders Ranges is from the sky. Splurge on a scenic flight to witness unparalleled views of Wilpena Pound, known as the crowning jewel of the Flinders Ranges. Alternatively, a 4WD tour provides another great way to explore these ancient landscapes. And be sure to head outside at night – with limited light pollution, the Flinders Ranges offers some of the best outback stargazing in all of Australia.

Murray River

If you’re looking for a different South Australia holiday destination, why not consider a cruise or road trip along the Murray River? Flowing more than 2500 kilometres from the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales through to South Australia’s very own Coorong, the mighty Murray River is around 130 million years old and is rich with Indigenous history, culture and heritage.

I definitely recommend exploring Coorong National Park, where popular activities include boating, kayaking, fishing and camping. Another great kayaking spot is the Hermann Gass Bird Sanctuary – I suggest having a picnic beside the Murray River whilst enjoying the birdlife. And did you know that the Murray River is home to the largest safari park in Australia? Monarto Safari Park boasts a range of African wildlife, including giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs and lions, and is another must-visit along the river.

Adelaide

In my opinion, Adelaide is one of the most underrated cities in Australia. With world-class art and music, a thriving restaurant and bar scene, and countless hidden laneways, Adelaide has more to offer than you may think.

I love gallery hopping along North Terrace, which is known as Adelaide’s cultural boulevard. The Art Gallery of South Australia houses one of Australia’s greatest art collections, while The South Australian Museum boasts the world’s largest collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural artefacts. For a change of scenery, I recommend checking out Adelaide Botanic Garden, a picture-perfect oasis right in the middle of the city. And if you’re feeling thirsty, the National Wine Centre of Australia is right next door.

Adelaide’s impeccable dining scene always has me coming back to this eclectic city. Whether you’re craving Italian, Asian or African fare, I promise there’s an award-winning restaurant dishing up something you’ll never forget. And if you love food, you absolutely must visit the Adelaide Central Market, where you can sample local produce and dine at some of Adelaide’s most popular eateries.
