10 UNMISSABLE QUEENSLAND EXPERIENCES

They don’t say ‘beautiful one day, perfect the next’ for no reason! Queensland boasts the most desirable holiday weather, incredible natural wonders and places built entirely to relax. We’ve compiled 10 must-do experiences in the sunny state, so get booking, stat!

CAPE YORK
Discovering the top end may not be an obvious one but it sure takes top priority. Whether rigging up your own 4WD and braving the red roads or joining a tour, you’ll soon feel more free (and sweatier) than ever. Strip off to cool down in the crystal clear, crocodile-free waters of Twin Falls as you explore the extensive rage of National Parks along your way to the very tippy-top of Australia.

CAIRNS
The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is a mish-mash of local culture, tourist attractions and nightlife with weather that calls for icy cold drinks by the pool. Dive onto indigenous culture at Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park or take the historic Kuranda Rail up to the village in the rainforest. You’ll pass Barron Falls on the way, before floating back down the mountain via Skyrail.

ATHERTON TABLELANDS & DAINTREE RAINFOREST
A short trip from Cairns city centre, this is one for the ages…literally. One of the world’s oldest rainforests, this tropical wonderland is full of unique plants and animal species that you need to see, and hear, to believe. Swim under Millaa Millaa Falls, or trail through geological wonders like the Chillagoe Caves and lava tubes of Etheridge Shire.

GREAT BARRIER REEF
Whether you cruise, sail or fly out from the mainland, the Great Barrier Reef is set to stun. Snorkel and dive the coral reefs to discover a colourful new world below the surface. Try to coincide your trip with coral spawning during November – December for the chance to witness new life across the world’s largest coral reef.

FRASER ISLAND
The world’s largest sand Island boasts freshwater lakes and lush rainforest. Just a short trip from Brisbane or Hervey Bay, this natural wonder even offers the Champagne Pools. Marvel at the incredibly transparent waters of Lake McKenzie and island hop to Lady Elliott for snorkelling in waters with visibility of 25-metres deep, year ‘round.

SUNSHINE COAST
Wander Hastings Street’s finest or hit up world famous surfing spots. Beautiful and convenient, family holidays here are genuinely relaxing from Noosa right down to Caloundra. Head inland for quaint villages like Montville or a hike up the Glass House Mountains. Dial up the excitement at Australia Zoo and Aussie World. Crikey, the Sunny Coast has a lot to offer.

BRISBANE
Queensland’s capital sure has a lot to give. The river city sparkles along the water at night and bustles with culture during the day. Get your fix at South Bank with a trip to the Gallery of Modern Art or branch out to meet dolphins and dive shipwrecks off Moreton Island. The Scenic Rim is a natural wonderland full of waterfalls and picnic spots with views for days.

GLADSTONE
The laid-back coastal towns of 1770, Agnes Water and Tannum Sands line the shores looking out to marine wonders, Lady Musgrave and Wilson Island. Witness turtle season from November to March on Heron Island or spot wild horses inland as you adventure through Kroombit Tops National Park.

GOLD COAST
Listed as the 8th World Surfing Reserve, the stretch from Burleigh Point to Snapper Rocks offers pristine waves, white-sand beaches and classic summer fun. From theme parks to Lamington National Park, there is no shortage of playfulness here. Head to Currumbin to try your hand at paddle boarding and tuck into the new wave of culinary delights dotting the coastline.

BUNDABERG
Settle along the Burnett River, and discover the coast of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Explore lush hinterland and historic towns of Childers and Gin Gin, and book early for a visit to Mon Repos Turtle Centre. The Coral Coast and Bargara are waiting for you to soak up the sunshine. Why not cap it off with a taste of the region’s international celebrated rum.
