Keywords are King

When someone types what you sell in the search box… will they find you?

When it comes to being found on the internet you cannot say that one tool is more important than any other. Yet, if someone types a word or phrase into the Search Engine Box do they find you? If not, you are missing out on organic Traffic. Organic traffic is the best and lowest barrier of entry traffic on the internet.

If you do the right Keyword research you can determine what the demand is for your product or service and how people are looking for it. Understanding how a prospect is actively searching for your product or service is an investment to start, but can create a significant pay off in the long run.

Let’s talk about Keywords and driving traffic to your website. Here are a few basic steps for you do-it-yourselfers to insure you have the best keywords in place.

  1. You need to be able to measure your progress. Make sure that your site has tracking software. We recommend Google Analytics. (Ten or so years ago what is now Google Analytics cost $10,000 – and all the pros still used it. Now it is free. Why wouldn’t you?? http://www.google.com/analytics/
  2. Write down the top 10 keywords for each page on your website. Every page has different content. Therefore, every page should have different keywords.
  3. Type your keyword into the search engine box. What comes up? Are there ads running for your keyword or keyword phrase? If so, that is a good sign  many people are searching for the same word or phrase – AND you know there is economic value if people are spending money to promote it.
  4. If you do not have a proprietary keyword tool go to Google Keyword Planner and see what traffic your words or phrases get. http://www.google.com/sktool/. You may be surprised to learn that a simple change like making a word plural can make a big difference in traffic.
  5. Once you have done your research, make sure these keywords are part of your content (text on the page). Don’t put your keyword in every sentence! That is called “keyword stuffing”. Use them in context in your text. The general rule… use English your fifth grade teacher would be proud of…
  6. Go to the back side of your website and make sure your primary keywords appear in your H1 tag (headline), meta tags and description.
  7. Watch your analytics and see what keywords are getting traffic and what are not. Make sure to remove those that are not working and add new keywords and phrases to look for new traffic.

YellowSchmello is finding that building a strong foundation using the correctly researched keywords is one of the most under served areas in most business’s web presence.

If you feel you are missing the boat when it comes to keyword research, or would like to learn more, Jill will be hosting a webinar on this topic next Thursday June 12th at 1:00 p.m. MDT. This is not a highly polished webinar – so you will be able to ask lots of questions.

I cannot tell a lie. This is an opportunity for you to learn – for free – as Jill is practicing for a paid webinar she will be doing for our friend Armand Morin later in the month. We thought you would appreciate the opportunity to listen in and it will help Jill.

How can you get access to the webinar? There is no registration page, just email Jill  ([email protected]) with the subject: I want to attend. Give us your name and email address and we will send you a link.

Remember… keywords can help make your business Stand Out and B Found.
