Google talk goes down, and no one knows why. The only update we have as yet are from official Google Apps Service Details page. Here is a snippet. Google promises to investigate and come back with reports by 5.20PM (IST). We will be back with more as soon as we hear of it.

Update (5.20 PM, IST):
True to its promise Google has updated the page with the latest information about the problem, and it seems they still trying to figure it out. The Status Marker is 'red', which means Google is considering the situation as a service outage.
However, the good news is that the problem is expected to be resolved in an hour (6.20 PM IST)and we are hopeful about it.

TheNextWeb, a London based website has also reported the same issue with Google's instant messenger service. The problem is not limited to gtalk, almost all instances of messaging have taken a big hit.
Gtalk on Android and all other mobile devices are also unoperational at the moment, crippling instant updates that people were using to share information. At a time when London is coping with the pressures of hosting the Olympic Games, they are left without one of the most useful tools of communication, the GTalk! We can only imagine the anger.
Update 6.20 PM, IST
Quite uncharacteristically, Google is pushing the expected time frame by one hour every single hour. The latest message that came out is not very encouraging:
"Our team is continuing to investigate this issue. We will provide an update by 7/26/12 7:20 PM with more information about this problem. Thank you for your patience"We have nothing else to do but wait and expect the engineers to get the problem solved. We are sure they are already doing all they can, but it has been quite some time now and getting impatient! Here is the latest screen grab:
The Big Picture Update
We realized that the time is right for a big picture of update of all the messages that Google has been issuing over the famous IM's outage.
We confess, Google seems at loss in figuring out what is happening with the chat application. Their initial indication of a solution by 5.20 PM, IST has been nullified by a message at the indicated hour that they are investigating the issue. Given the enormity of the problem, we can understand the extra time, but we would have appreciated a clearer and transparent communication. We were expecting something better for the 7.20 PM update, but the solution seems to elude, at least to another hour. Now we are to wait until 8.20 PM!
We do not understand Google's obsession with the timing tough, why X.20PM, why not X.30PM? While we try and figure out that mystery, keep tuned for the 8.20 PM update. Here is the latest screenshot:
